The canton area is commonly divided into three parts.
- Bernese Oberland (Berner Oberland) - It lies in the south of the canton and is part of the Alps.
- Bernese Mittelland (Berner Mittelland) - Made up of the valley of the Aare, the Emme rivers, and some of the foothills of the Bernese Alps, as well as the plain around the capital, Bern.
- Lakes Region (Seeland) - Zone and bilingual (French is German) concentrated around Lake Biel.
