Here the waters of the Liri river flow for about 120 km. It is part of the Authentic Villages of Italy.

Geographical notes

Due to its strategic geographical position, the town has always been considered a "land of passage", a land that connects the Tyrrhenian side with the Fucense area, through the state road 690 Avezzano-Sora and the state road 82 of the Liri Valley. Capistrello rises at the foot of Mount Arezzo about 100 kilometers east of Rome and about 110 west of Pescara, in a pass that divides the upper Liri valley in two. To the north-west of the municipal territory is the Nerfa valley.

When to go

Summer is the best time to visit Capistrello, the churches of the ancient village, the outlet of Claudio's emissary, considered one of the greatest works of hydraulic engineering, and the Renga plateau which offers naturalistic scenarios of incomparable beauty. The two hamlets are characteristic: the authentic medieval village of Corcumello with its walls, towers and churches and that of Pescocanale which marks the geographical border of the diocese of Marsi with that of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo.

Background

The old village of Capistrello and the Roveto Valley

The presence of man in the Marsica and in the Roveto Valley it can still be defined much older, certainly already from the Lower Paleolithic, also considering the discovery of laminar splinters of the proto-Levalloisian type which took place a few km from Capistrello. In the Middle Paleolithic (150,000 years ago), it is certain the presence in these places of Neanderthal hunters who, coming from the Tyrrhenian coast, went as far as the lake area of the Fucino looking for prey to feed on. There are also numerous testimonies of human presence, during the Middle Palaeolithic, in the Liri Valley. The settlement of "Le Fosse" of Civitella Roveto instead, it dates back to the Bronze Age. Returned to light during some excavations for the construction of a quarry, it was probably used by a pastoral community of the central Apennines that settled on Lake Fucino to practice a seasonal transhumance. Numerous settlements and archaeological finds referable to the Bronze Age.The outlet of the Claudius Emissary, built between 41 and 52 AD. by the Emperor Claudius, it constitutes the final part of the great Roman hydraulic engineering work that allowed the waters of the Fucino lake to flow along the course of the Liri river under the ancient inhabited area of the town and to obtain the first reclamation of the former lake. The work was resumed by Prince Torlonia who in the 19th century managed to definitively complete the drainage of the Fucino, radically changing the economy of the area and the lifestyle of the population. On 13 January 1915 Capistrello was also hit and seriously damaged by the terrible earthquake of the Marsica. Between June and September 1944 one of the most tragic events in the area took place in the town. Thirty-three local shepherds, the "33 martyrs of Capistrello", were captured, imprisoned and then shot in the back of the head one by one. Some of them tried to flee to the mountains to escape the atrocities of war and Nazism.

What see

Outlet of Claudio's Emissary

Plateau of the Renga
  • 1 Outlet of Claudio's Emissary, via Emissary (Lower part of the ancient village). The work of great historical, naturalistic and archaeological value. The tunnels made the waters of Lake Fucino flow into the Liri River to drain and reclaim the Fucense basin and favor agricultural production. The work that lasted 11 years involved about 25,000 slaves, started in 41 AD, and ended towards the middle of 52 AD. After the fall of the Roman Empire, a period of decline followed with very little maintenance and the lake, following the obstruction of the emissary, soon returned to its original levels. Only in 1878 the Fucino was declared dried up by law following the works completed by Prince Alessandro Torlonia who successfully resumed the original project by expanding the main canal. The works carried out by Torlonia have not altered the appearance of the outlet of the Emissary which still appears in all its grandeur with the characteristic walls made in opus reticulatum. At its side is a second bridge, renovated in the nineteenth century, which allowed the ancient Via Traianea to connect the Roman colonies of Alba Fucens and Sora. Characteristic and impressive is the large, perfectly shaped boulder of rock overlooking the work.
  • 2 Plateau of the Renga, Provincial road 63 Simbruina (direction Fillet-Trevi in Lazio). Wooded area of naturalistic interest located on the western side of the municipal territory on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio.
  • 3 Rianza River Park, Via Ponticello (Hamlet of Pescocanale). Among the most beautiful areas of the Roveto Valley. A corner of paradise from a naturalistic and landscape point of view. The protected area, crossed by the Rianza stream, was inaugurated in 2015. It is equipped with paths equipped with areas for campers, picnics and games for children.
  • 4 De Pontibus-Vetoli palace-castle, Via Conte Vetoli (Historic center of the hamlet of Corcumello). On the walls of the building there are important architectural testimonies such as the noble coats of arms and ancient inscriptions. The structure has two construction periods: the first, built in the fourteenth century by the powerful De Pontibus family and the second, in the fifteenth century, which saw the expansion of the castle building under the dominion of the Vetoli family. The building later built next to the original building is called Palazzo Marimpieri and has a large central courtyard.
