The village is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1061 as Civitella, before then the center was known with the name of Petrarolo; in the seventeenth century it assumed the name of Civitella della Valle, while a century later the contemporary name. Throughout the late Middle Ages Civitella was part of the County of Sunrises and belonged to the powerful Colonna family. In 1907 the most serious mining accident in the United States took place, the Monongah disaster where numerous Rovetan miners, who emigrated to work in the mine, lost their lives due to one of the greatest disasters of Italian emigration. The town was severely damaged in 1915 by the Marsica earthquake and devastation during the Second World War. Enrico Mattei, founder and first president of ENI, spent his childhood and part of his adolescence in the Abruzzo town.
