Background

This settlement was born during the construction of the Cagliari-Golfo Aranci railway line and its branch for Sassari and Porto Torres, which took place in the second half of the 19th century by the Royal Company of the Sardinian Railways directed by Benjamin Piercy.

The countryside west of Ozieri was in fact chosen to build the port, later called Chilivani, where the line for the two turritan centers would branch off from the main line.

One of the theories regarding the Chilivani denomination traces the name of the railway yard and the village that surrounds it from that of a Parsi princess, called Kiliwani, whom the engineer Piercy had met during his long stay in India, where he worked for the construction of the royal railways. The truth is that the name of Chilivani is much older: in a document dated 1643 of the bishop's canteen of Alghero it is in fact mentioned "Su saltu de Quilivane" (ie the countryside of Chilivani).

With the end of the Second World War, the government (Antonio Segni, the future president of the republic, was particularly active on this issue, at least locally) decided to start a land reform program. The Cassa del Mezzogiorno, through the Sarda Agricultural Land Transformation Body (ETFAS, established after the war), in the early 1950s decided to favor the creation of the so-called "small peasant property".

In Chilivani the ETFAS intervened in the plain, in the areas called: Rizzolu, Tola, Fraigas, Figos, and others. The farms sometimes consisted of plots that were not contiguous, but not too far away (at the time people moved on foot, by donkey or on horseback, the car was for a lucky few). The ETFAS also took care of building the house, the windbreaks, the roads, the electrification, the well, the cistern and some buildings useful for the activity of each company (the plate affixed by the institution is still visible on each house builder, and the number of the farm). On the plain, the assignees mainly cultivated wheat. Where the land lent itself better to other uses, the vineyard was cultivated (the famous Vermentino in the locality of Tola), and in the so-called iscias (tracts of fertile land, often adjacent to streams) the necessary vegetable garden was cultivated. family and small businesses.

In 1995 the state road adjacent to the town was the scene of the murder of two young carabinieri, known as the "murder of Chilivani" or "murder of Perdesemene".
