Geographical notes

On the first reliefs of the Treviso area, the country is 16 km from Vittorio Veneto, 21 from Conegliano, 17 from Valdobbiadene, 41 from Treviso.

Background

It was certainly inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Paleolithic findings in Follina, Mesolithic in Valmareno and imbricum fragments from the Bronze Age; few are instead the finds that testify the human presence in the pre-Christian period. Perhaps in Roman times the via Claudia Augusta Altinate which connected it passed through here Altino to Germany through the current Resia pass. The artery, fundamental both from a civil and military point of view, in this area crossed the Praderadego pass and reached the Valbelluna. Some permanent settlements had to develop only during the barbarian invasions (the first nucleus of the current Castelbrando dates back to this period, then the seat of the local lords) and in particular under the dominion of the Lombards, whose influence was very strong given the proximity to the seat of the Duchy of Ceneda. According to tradition, the fiefdom of Valmareno was established at that time which, in addition to Cison, also included the current Miane and Follina; it would then have been granted to the bishops of Ceneda by Queen Theodolinda (late 6th century) and remained under their authority both under the Kingdom of the Franks and during the Holy Roman Empire.

Around the 11th century, the bishops were succeeded by the noble families. The fiefdom passed to the counts of Porcia and, following the marriage between Sofia di Colfosco and Guecello Da Camino (XII century), to the Caminesi. When Rizzardo VI, last of the Caminesi "di Sopra" (1335) died without heirs, the territory passed for a short period back to the bishops, who finally gave it to the Republic of Venice. Only in 1421, however, Venice was able to definitively impose its own podestà due to a series of events, such as the claims by the Da Camino family.

On February 18, 1436, Doge Francesco Foscari entrusted the territory to Erasmo da Narni (better known as Gattamelata) and Brandolino da Bagnacavallo, known leaders who fought for the cause of Venice. However, the counts were forced to pay a heavy tax for feudal rights, so that in 1439 the former renounced his rights and ceded all the lordship to the latter. His descendants, called Brandolini and later Brandolini D'Adda, held the Valmareno until 1797, when the Serenissima fell by Napoleon.

Cison followed the fate of the whole Veneto and, after passing from the French to the Austrians and vice versa, it was definitively Austrian becoming part of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. From 1866 it was a municipality of the Kingdom of Italy.

What see

  • Church of San Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria Assunta. The original church was an ancient parish church, which was then rebuilt in 1683, with completion of the works in 1740. It would have been designed by the local architect Paolo Crempsen. The bell tower was never completed and still remains a trunk. Very peculiar thing, it has two facades, one facing west (the oldest) and adorned with three statues by Marco Casagrande (Faith, Hope and Charity) and the other to the east with the statue of San Giovanni surrounded by Prudence , from Justice, from Fortress and from Temperance, arranged in pairs on the sides. There is probably an allegorical meaning in this, with reference to the political virtues of those who exercise civil power, given that they overlook the loggia, the seat of administrative and judicial power.
Inside, with a single nave, there are other statues by Casagrande (again Faith and Justice) and, at the main altar, two angels by Antonio Bianchi. By Egidio Dall'Oglio, a local painter, I am aAssumption (copied from an altarpiece in the Piazzetta now preserved in the Louvre) and one Birth and death of the Baptist, while the shovel with the Transit of San Giuseppe it is attributed to Francesco Fontebasso. The early eighteenth century is the funeral monument to Guido VIII Brandolini, in the chapel of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. Work of Pietro Baratta, it is completed by three sculptures depicting Religion, Prudence and Patience. • Loggia. Already at the end of the thirteenth century on one side of the square the presence of temporary and mobile structures (a tent or a wooden canopy) for the performance of administrative acts is attested; over time these structures become solid masonry structures that take on the name of Loggia. It was built between 1647 and 1648 on a project by the architect Michel Zambianco di Farra di Soligo; as well as an administrative center, it was to function as a court. The Chancellor and the Cavalier of the court had his residence on the upper floors; in the basement there were prisons.
Brando Castle
The stately building
  • Castelbrando. It is the fortress that rises above the town on the slopes of Mount Castello from which it dominates the villages of Valmareno, Cison and the entire valley; in the Middle Ages it was called Coast Castle (Castrum Costae). It owes its current name to the ancient Brandolini family from Forlì, who had the lordship of it for centuries.
The place on which Castelbrando is located was frequented since the Paleoveneto period and continued to host settlements even in Roman and Ostrogoth times. It is believed that in these centuries the population was forced to settle along the heights of "half coast" as the valley floor was occupied by a marshy environment. The construction of a real fortification took place during the early Middle Ages; it could be placed, more precisely, in the first half of the 10th century, during the invasions of the Hungarians. In 962 the emperor Otto I granted the prerogatives of count to the bishop of Ceneda Sicardo, assigning him the jurisdiction of Valmareno and Castelbrando. Later the fortress passed from the hands of various feudal lords, including the da Camino, the da porcia, the Colfosco, until in the fifteenth century it was subject to Venice, under whose dominion the fortress lost its warlike character and in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was transformed by the Brandolini, who owned it in full from 1436, in an elegant building, applying the style of the Venetian villas and creating an interesting and innovative "heating" system for the time. The counts kept the castle until 1959, when they sold it to the Salesians who used it as a seminary and place of retreat. Sold by them in 1997 to an entrepreneur, it has been restored and now houses a hotel.
From 18 to 20 April 2009 it was the international headquarters of the first G8 of agriculture, chaired by the Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies Luca Zaia.
  • Radio Museum (La Loggia Theater). On the top floor of the theater The Loggia the exhibition hall contains 72 examples of vintage radios - period from 1920 to the 1970s - including particularly rare pieces such as the Polish Sluchawscki Detefon Mod DT2 (1920); an American RCA Mod. Radiola 18 from 1928 - 1929 and other rarities.
  • Way of the water. It is a natural path that runs along the Rujo stream; the road goes into the woods and reaches the old mills that once characterized the area, as well as some hydraulic regulation works. The path has been the subject of recent restoration and maintenance interventions that allow you to take advantage of this walk to discover ancient activities, immersed in nature.

Of particular interest is the visit to the hamlets of the municipal area, inhabited centers that have preserved their characteristic stone houses.

  • Tovena. He has recovered almost all the old stone houses; to see the octagonal fountain in masegno stone and red stone, eighteenth century; there church of Saints Simon and Judas, which houses a triptych on the seventeenth-century high altar; the rectory with the coats of arms of the brandolini and bishop Lioni; Magagnin House, traditional stone house that preserves eighteenth-century frescoes on the facade.
  • Walls. Mura also has houses all in stone.
  • Rolle. The interest of the town lies entirely in its sunny position among the woods and vineyards of Prosecco; the stream that crosses it forms a small waterfall here, and still shows the ancient wash houses and drinking troughs that have recently been recovered and restored.
