Understand

It begins in the year 1592, vague news says that Sebastião Marinho took crystals from Goiás to Rio de Janeiro, believed to have been made by Cristalina.

Around the 18th century, at the height of the expansion of mining through the interior of the Captaincy of Goiás, which at the time belonged to the State of São Paulo, the flags coming from the capital of São Paulo reached a large mountain range where they found huge amounts of rock crystals of all the types and sizes scattered on the floor. Due to the large amount of ore, they named the region Serra dos Cristais. However, at that time, the main purpose of the flags was to find gold, not giving importance to the crystal found in the region.

For a long time the Serra dos Cristais region was forgotten, only in 1879, two Frenchmen: Etiene Lepesqueur and Leon Laboissière, coming from the neighboring town of Peixe Bom, today Paracatu, where they traded gold, sent crystal samples to Paris in France , where they were sold for a good price.

Due to their purity and quality, the crystals were transformed into optical instruments and beautiful pieces of handicraft, having gone to decorate the houses of the French bourgeoisie, bringing the promise of great profits. On January 15, 1917, the Municipality was officially installed of São Sebastião dos Cristais, with a large number of people coming from the city of Paracatu.

On March 31, 1918, by State Law No. 577, the name São Sebastião dos Cristais was changed to Cristalina, the latter being preserved until today.
