Cities

  • 1 Reed  – Capital and largest locality of Dominica.
  • Portsmouth
  • Scott's Head  – The Scott's Head site south of Roseau offers exceptional underwater landscapes among the most spectacular in the Antilles. This site is a marine reserve and must be protected. A taxi ride costs around CDN $ 50 (2005) from Roseau and the driver will wait for you while you dive. You just have to go to the end of the point on the north side: Caribbean Sea (the Atlantic side to the south is much too turbulent because of the waves and the current). By going to the end of the path, the beach for the launch is easier. If we don't get to the end, the launch is on slippery rocks and more difficult.

  • Marigot
  • Calibishie
  • Soufriere

Other destinations

Photograph of the southern part of Soufriere Bay as seen from Scott's Head.
  • Morne Diablotins  – The ascent to the top of the island, 1,447m, can be organized but a guide is necessary due to the multitude of paths and the lack of maps. The climate on the heights is extremely humid and can be cold.
  • Champagne reef  – Halfway between Roseau and Scott's Head, a very accessible and surprising site. A wild beach, little bottom and strings of bubbles, witnesses of the volcanic activity of the island, which emerge from the seabed. As much to listen to as to see, a rare spectacle. Also accessible by bus, since the beach is very close to the road.

They can be reached (info from April 2013) from mainland France on 05 96 42 04 05 There is usually one boat per day. The trip lasts 2 hours. Plan an hour in advance for boarding from Martinique or Guadeloupe. Note that once you arrive in Roseau, the immigration process can sometimes be very long ...

Circulate

Traffic is light on the roads, and quite difficult in the capital Roseau. The western part of the island is served by a fairly good coastal road. The north-south journey can be done in about 3 hours. On the eastern part the roads are more delicate (mountain road type) and the traffic times can become very long. 'trees or stones which may temporarily obstruct the road.

By bus

It is very easy to travel by bus around Roseau, and on the southwest coast. On the east coast they are much rarer. The drivers can pick you up and drop you off wherever you want on their journey (no specific stop). Buses are unmarked vehicles, how do you spot them? These are usually Japanese 'Toyota Lite Ace' type vans. They are identified by the 'H' on the license plate.
