Two days in the Tokaj area - Dwa dni w okolicy Tokaju

Two days in the Tokaj area is an informal sightseeing tour in the area Tokaju in Hungary. The trail is intended mainly for motorists / cyclists. The route runs in southern Slovakia, eastern Hungary and northern Romania, through the vicinity of (Tokaj region) with a very long wine tradition.

Preparations

No special preparation is needed, but it is recommended to travel in summer.

Drive

To the first point on the route - Different, you can get from Poland by road no. 67 - then you can see it on the way Slovak Paradise. From the Poland / Slovakia border, the time to reach the city is approx. 2-3 hours by car.

Route - day one

Slovakia

Rożniawa

The Slovak part of the route is quite short - it measures approx. 55 km. The starting point is Rożniawa, where it is worth visiting the Old Town and the mining museum; one third of the population are Hungarians.

Buzica

Leaving Rożniawa, follow road no. 50 in the direction of Kosice. In Moldava nad Bodnou, turn right to Buzica to the Slovak-Hungarian border crossing. The peculiarity of this passage is that at the turn on the Slovak side there is a lonely bench with unknown purpose. There is no control at the border.

Hungary

In Hungary, you should first take road No. 3, and a bit further, in Encs, take road No. 39 to Abaújszántó. In the town we have to drive approx. 6 km to Mad - it was there (if we left from Polish) is the optimal accommodation offer (in the wild among the vineyards) - you can also go to Tokaju try there, but it will be quite expensive.

Route - day two

Tokay

Regardless of the decision made as to the accommodation, the first point of the second day will be Tokaj (from Mád road 39, turn left 37 and then 38). It is worth visiting the old town and buying some Tokaj (wine) and possibly souvenirs.

Nyíregyháza

The second point on the map of day 2 will be Nyíregyháza - where it is worth taking a bath in thermal pools Sóstófürdő. It will also be good to buy a map of Romania in the shopping center (on the top floor) and eat a Hungarian delicacy - langos (quite heavy food). Romania (90 km to Csengersima - first on route 41, then via Mátészalka - route 49).

Romania

There are usually no crowds at the border. At the border, you need to buy a Romanian vignette (for all roads; one weekly vignette costs 7 euro). The first city abroad - Satu Mare. It is difficult to find an exchange office - it will be easier to exchange money at a money changer (in Satu Mare or one of the nearby towns). Down Săpânţy it is 90 km from Satu Mare (road no. 19). The village will be the last place on the route - there is a Merry Cemetery there (admission 5 RON / person - as of 2014). You can spend the night at the campground or in a hotel in Sighetu Marmaţiei.

Due to the length of the route (approx. 350 km), it is best to cover it with your own car.

Security

There is no threat of common crime (only on the way to the Merry Cemetery, you should watch out for beggars, who are often intrusive).
