In May 2006 the million dollar project "Ederseerundweg" was officially inaugurated.

Elaborate, combined cycle and footpaths were built on two confusing, busy riverside roads. On the occasion of the renovation of the embankment from the barrier wall to Niederwerbe, a 9 km footpath and cycle path was laid out. There is also a new path on the road from Bringhausen to Rehbach. Thus, the Edersee now be circumnavigated safely.

The route is also known as the "Edersee Cycle Path".

Route profile

  • Length: 51 km
  • Signposting: The route was signposted in 2008 with some feeder routes and adventure loops. The Ederseerundweg (Edersee-Radweg) is abbreviated as ER. The adventure loops are called ER 1 to ER 4.
Cycling with a tailwind:

  • Slopes: There is a substantial incline from Asel Bay to Basdorf. Otherwise the route is partly hilly.
  • Path condition: 51.3% asphalt; longer, gravel forest roads and nature trails are used.
  • Traffic load: Some of the streets are quieter. However, all roads with heavy traffic have cycle paths.
  • Suitable bike: Since the entire route already has a few longer climbs, it is best to use a trekking bike with a mountain-compatible gearshift. A little profile on the tires also makes sense, as there are some gravel roads to drive on.
  • Family suitability: The path is free of traffic on large stretches. However, the larger inclines are not particularly suitable for smaller children. When using the Edersee passenger shipping Smaller sections of the route can also be ridden (with bike transport for a fee).
  • Inline suitability- is in principle given on the new road-accompanying cycle paths. However, the paths are quite hilly and heavily occupied by pedestrians and cyclists. Inexperienced skaters should refrain from using it.

You need a bit of stamina for the hilly 55 km around the Edersee.

It is advisable to travel the route, ideally to spend the night in the Edersee area once or, better, twice. So you still have some time for the many sights in the area of ​​the Edersee. Ideal is z. Public transport

The Wabern train station is ideal for your journey. Both Intercity (connection Hamburg - Hanover - Frankfurt) and regional express (connection Kassel - Frankfurt) stop in Wabern.

If you want, you can take the branch line to Bad Wildungen from here (diesel multiple unit). In Vega it is best to leave this, otherwise you will come back from Bad Wildungen have to cycle back.

Before that, however, a "hillside" has to be overcome with the road. From Waldeck-West you can take the Waldecker Bergbahn to Waldeck Castle drive. The track leads from 192 m on Edersee to 368 m up to the castle.

To Prostitution (Summer toboggan run) follow the cycle path that runs alongside the road. From here it goes on a road with only moderate traffic to the Scheid peninsula (campsites).

Shortcut to 1/3 of the route: From Scheid you can take the ferry (ferry times see Operator side), if the water conditions permit, translate to Rehbach (ferry service: 01520-9721564):

Shortly before Scheid, the Ederseerundweg leads up to gravel forest paths Basdorf (about 100 m difference in altitude). Above you can take a detour to beautiful view of the Kahlen Haardt at. In autumn and winter, the dam (when the water level is below 230 m) is parallel to the Aseler ferry Aseler Bridge free again. The historic stone arch bridge is accessible. You can get to the other side with dry feet (shortcut option).

Herzhausen at the western end of the reservoir can be reached via partly bumpy forest roads. You can continue cycling along the Eder in the direction of Frankenberg (rail connection). A visit to the is definitely worth it Kellerwald National Park Center.

You cycle on a new road-accompanying cycle path to Rehbach (hill with a moderate increase). From here you can either cycle directly to Hemfurth (on asphalt) or continue on the Ederseerundweg.

There is another particularly beautiful stretch of shore up to the barrier wall (on gravel forest paths past the climbing park). From the Hammerspitze peninsula you have a beautiful view of the lake.
