Ghent (nid. Gent, fr. Gand) - city in Belgium, we Flanders, provincial capital East Flanders. It has over 230 thousand. residents. Ghent is a city of a quarter of a million people with a rich history. At the same time, Ghent has a relatively high percentage of young people and a significant population of seasonal students.

Characteristic

Ghent by night

In the Middle Ages, Ghent was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It was once considered the second largest city north of the Alps, after Paris. The influence of this rich past can be clearly seen when looking at the imposing architecture of the churches and houses of wealthy merchants. The entire city center has been restored in this way and still exudes the atmosphere of a thriving late medieval urban state. Since the city council freed the center from cars, it is now a very friendly and open space that continues to delight even the people who live there.

In contrast to Leuven, another university city in Flanders, young people are not the only category of people living there. There is an interesting mix of foreigners who have come to live there, professionals working for large international companies and artists among the inhabitants of Ghent. This mix makes people more tolerant and open minded. This atmosphere permeates every aspect of city life than in smaller provincial cities or in greater Antwerp.

Communication

On foot

The center of Ghent is quite small so you can walk around it. However, the main station (Gent Sint-Pieters) is not in the city center but takes about half an hour to walk. The best option is to take the tram which will take you directly to the center in 10-15 minutes.

Bicycles are the preferred means of transport around Ghent

By bike

Cycling is the recommended way to get around Ghent. However, there are many paved roads that make cycling an amazing experience. Also make sure to stay away from tram rails. Nevertheless, you will see that you are not alone on your bike: many locals use their bikes to get around. Even the ex-mayor rides his bike all day! There are plenty of bike racks nearby which make it easy to lock your bike (important!) Many one way roads are two way for your bikes.

Public transport

The transport system in Ghent is perfect and usually on time. A single ticket costs 3 euros if bought on the bus or tram, or 2.50 euros at the ticket machines near the stops, such a ticket is valid for an hour's journey on all trams and buses. From July 2020, tickets on the bus or tram can only be paid for with a contactless card, smartphone, etc. If you plan to stay longer, buy a ticket for 16 €, it is valid for 10 journeys within the city and can also be used in other Flemish cities (such as Antwerp or Bruges). Trams are the fastest and most convenient way to travel, especially from the train station to the city center.

If there is a ticket machine at a bus or tram stop, you will have to buy a ticket there, as in this case the bus or tram driver does not sell the ticket. You can also buy a ticket via SMS if you have a Belgian mobile phone, instructions are on the poles at each stop. The shipping company is De Lijn.

At the Lijnwinkel kiosk (located near the Sint-Pieters train station) you can get a free map of the city and the surrounding area with all bus and tram lines.

Tongue

Ghent people are hospitable people who are usually bilingual or multilingual, especially English, French and German are widespread. Some shops even have Spanish speaking staff.

The mystery of the Righteous Judges

Ghent was deeply shocked in 1934 when 2 panels of the famous Adoration of the Mystical Lamb by John and Hubert van Eyck were stolen from St. Bawon, the event known as "daring theft" because the theft of religious inventory was unheard of at the time. The perpetrator demanded a ransom from the Diocese of Ghent and returned one of the panels to support his claim. The diocese refused to pay, but at this point the theft became so infamous that it became impossible to sell or auction another panel, called The Just Judges. A search operation of unimaginable proportions was launched, reaching far beyond Belgium, but to no avail. The only clues came from Arsène Goedertier, who confessed on his deathbed that only he knew where the missing panel was stored and that "no one can retrieve it without public attention." Investigators found letters to the diocese in his office linking him to the crime, but he died before he could reveal the panel's location. This confession sparked a treasure hunt that continues today as the panel remains lost. The case is dealt with by many professional and amateur detectives, and every few years one of them comes up with a theory credible enough to justify excavations. Churches and chapels in Antwerp, Tervuren and many other places were searched, and walls were even knocked down in the hope of retrieving a lost panel, but all efforts were unsuccessful. There are even rumors that the SS exhumed Arsène's body from his grave during World War II, hoping to find further clues. Some believe that the panel has been lost in time, but many others firmly believe that it still exists and can very well be hidden in Ghent! If you decide to participate in a treasure hunt while visiting the city, who knows? Perhaps you could find it ....

Gastronomy

Ghent is an excellent and inexpensive example of Flemish cuisine, which in the eyes of the locals is one of the best in Europe, as it combines French delicacy with northern European solidity. Try local specialties such as mussels, ribs or stoverij (a type of delicate meat cooked for three hours in dark beer with brown sauce) with Belgian fries.

Another dish from Ghent is "Gentse waterzooi" (a bit "boiled water from Ghent"), which was originally food for the poor, a stew made of cheap fish (usually turbot) and vegetables. Now it is also often made with chicken.

Belgian waffles can be bought at many street stalls throughout the city.

Restaurants on Korenmarkt and Vrijdagmarkt are a good deal, at affordable prices; Brasserie Borluut's menus and 'menus of the day' provide incredible value, including the Gentse waterzooi. Truly exclusive restaurants can be found in the 14th-century Patershol district, not far from the Castle. There is also a large Turkish community in Ghent, centered around the Sleepstraat a little further north with many Turkish restaurants.

Delicious local specialties, the Stoverij (beef stew) is particularly good at € 14-25 for the main course.
  • Pampas, Burgstraat 1, ☏ 32 9 233 68 66. This is a place to visit if you need a meat protein injection.

Obszar studencki

  • Overpoortstraat to ulica pełna 34 pubów i barów, gdzie w ciągu tygodnia (zwłaszcza w środy i czwartki wieczory) wszyscy studenci wariują.

To świetny wybór:

Sprawdź przytulny De Kleine Kunst i wesołą Fabula Rasa wzdłuż kanału w Ferdinand Lousbergkaai.

  • Old Fashioned, Hoogpoort 1.
  • De Spinnekop, Einde were 44.
  • Gentse Stadsbrouwerij Gruut (Browar Gruut), Grote Huidevettershoek 10.
