Gertwiller, a charming little wine-growing village, is located at the foot of Mont Sainte Odile, between Barr and Obernai.
Understand
The village, crossed by an important communication route, was a traditional stopover for travelers and carriers. There are still post offices and inns and a superb sign of the "Relais des deux clefs".
Gertwiller is a former empire village attested since 1160 and belonged to Strasbourg from 1568 to the Revolution. The origin of the name of the village comes from the German "Gerte" which means willows (represented on the coat of arms).
The know-how and the concentration of pastry chefs in this locality have contributed to making gingerbread a cultural and gastronomic specialty ofAlsace. Two local companies produce these sweets.
