The canton of Graubünden has three official languages:German, the'Italian and the Romansh. It is the only trilingual Swiss canton, and the only one where Romansh is spoken.

German is the majority language, spoken by 68% of the population, mainly in the northwest of the canton. Romansh is spoken by 15% of the population, especially inEngadine and around Disentis / Mustér ; slowly declining, its future is uncertain. Italian is spoken in the southern valleys of Mesolcina, Calanca, Val Bregaglia and Poschiavo and totals 10% of the speakers. 7% of the population speaks another language.

Romansh is a generic term covering a group of closely related dialects, spoken in southern Switzerland and belonging to the Rhaeto-Romanesque family. These dialects include Sursylvain, Subsylvain, Sourmiran, Puter, and Vallader. They have been standardized since 1982 based on the work of the Swiss linguist Heinrich Schmid. The standardized language, called Rumantsch Grischun, is slowly being accepted.

Romansh has been recognized as one of the four national languages ​​of Switzerland since the adoption of the Swiss federal constitution on . It is considered, with certain restrictions, as an official language at the federal level since the popular vote of the , which means that Romansh speakers can use the Rumantsch grischun to correspond with the federal government and hope for a response in the same language. In Graubünden, Romansh has the status of official language only at cantonal level. The municipalities are free to specify their own official languages.
