Guardiaregia is a center of the Molise.

Geographical notes

Guardiaregia is located at the foot of Mount Mutria (1816 m high), one of the highest mountains in the Apennine chain; its territory is rich in streams, such as the Quirino stream. It is 10 km from Bojano, 21 from Campobasso, 37 from Piedimonte Matese and from Isernia,

When to go

The climate is hot in summer, with temperatures around 30 degrees, and cold in winter; snow usually arrives in January.

Background

In Roman times the center was an outpost of the Samnites; it was conquered during the Samnite wars (2nd century BC), later becoming a Roman municipium.

In the 10th century the new Lombard town was built, with the medieval fortress on Colle la Motta for the protection of Campochiaro. At the time of Celestine V (13th century) some hermitages dependent on the diocese of Bojano.

The town was damaged several times over the centuries by earthquakes. The biggest earthquake that is remembered was that of 1805, which destroyed the parish church.

  • WWF Oasis (WWF Oasis of Guardiaregia-Campochiaro). There Guardiaregia Regional Nature Reserve - Campochiaro is a protected natural area established in 1996 in the Molise area of ​​Matese in Contrada Mencaro of the municipality of Guardiaregia. It occupies an area of ​​2,187.00 ha and borders on the Matese regional park. The management is established by the agreement between WWF Italy and the Municipalities of Guardiaregia e Campochiaro.
