Guiana (also called Guyana or Guayana; in SpanishGuayanas) is a physical region of theSouth America, between the Atlantic Ocean, the basins of the Orinoco, the Amazon River and the Rio Negro, its tributary.

Geographical notes
It consists of a vast plateau inclined towards the north, bordered by a flat coastal strip that continues to the east in Brazilian territory and to the west in the Venezuelan one.
Within the region some also consider: the region of the Venezuelan Guayana (comprising the States of Amazonas, Bolívar is Delta Amacuro), formerly known as the Province of Guayana, in the southeast of Venezuela.
Background
Historically within the Guianas was also included: Portuguese Guiana (Brazilian Guiana), in the northeast of Brazil, originally part of the Portuguese Empire. Between the Rio Branco, the Amazon River and the Atlantic Ocean. Its territory totally included that of the current states of Amapá is Roraima and the northern part of the states of Para is Amazonas, including the portion of Guiana Shield present in Brazilian territory.
