To go
By plane
If you come fromNarita International Airport, take the JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station, and change to the Chūō Line for a train going to Hachiōji (approx. 2 h 15, 3 670 JPY). Getting up to the Chūō platforms requires a good climb, but since the Chūō trains depart from Tokyo Station, you should find a free seat. The alternative is to continue on the Narita Express to Shinjuku and from there take the Chūō Line or the Keiō Line (cheaper).
If you have a Japan Rail Pass and if the timing is right, you might be able to book a seat on a Kaiji or Azusa train from Shinjuku and have a more comfortable ride to Hachiōji.
The Narita Express runs directly from the airport to Hachiōji twice in the evening (departing from Narita at 19 h 45 and 20 h 44), and there are two trains from Hachiōji to Narita in the morning (5 h 19, 5 h 55).
There are 6 airport limousine buses from Narita to JR and Keiō train stations in Hachiōji (approx. 2 h 40, 3 700 JPY).
Since theHaneda Airport, the easiest way by train is to take the Keikyū Line to Shinagawa where you can take the JR Yamanote Line in either direction to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station, then take the Chūō Line to Hachiōji. It costs 1 180 JPY in all cases (approximately 1 h 45). A little faster but asking for one more change is to go through Yokohama.
6 daily limousine buses go from Haneda to JR and Keiō stations in Hachiōji (approx. 1 h 30-2 h, 1 700 JPY).
By train
There are two main stations serving Hachiōji, coming directly from Tokyo and 10 min on foot from each other:
- 1 JR Hachiōji Station (八 王子 駅 hachiōji-eki) – The JR Chūō line goes to Mitaka both from Tokyo Station (780 JPY) and Shinjuku (460 JPY). Chūō Special Rapid trains (中央 特快 Chūō-tokkai) faster go from Shinjuku to Hachiōji in 35 min, compared to the 50-60 min classic fast trains.
JR Hachiōji is also a major stop for trains limited expressAzusa (あ ず さ) between Tokyo and Matsumoto, and trains limited expressKaiji (か い じ) between Tokyo, Ōtsuki and Kōfu. These trains ask to pay extra on top of the normal train fare. Those who have a Japan Rail Pass can borrow it without paying; they can get into the cars at the seats without reservations of Kaiji or Azusa in Shinjuku and arrive in Hachiōji in just 30 min. - 2 Keiō-hachiōji Station (京 王八 王子 駅 keiō hachiōji-eki) – The cheapest between Tokyo and Hachiōji is with the company Keiō (50 min with the fastest services, 350 JPY).
By car
- Via the Chūō Expressway (Hachiōji exits).

By bus
Night buses arrive and depart from Keiō Station in Hachiōji. Services start from Kyoto (Tama Bus / Keihan Bus; 7 950 JPY the go; 14 310 JPY round trip), toOsaka (Tama Bus / Kintetsu Bus; 8 250 JPY the go; 14 770 JPY round trip) and Kanazawa (Tama Bus / Hokuriku Railroad; 8 250 JPY the go; 14 850 JPY round trip).

- The car rental is a reasonable choice, but keep in mind that traffic can be slow and parking anywhere in Tokyo can be expensive.
To see
- 1 Sagami Lake (相 模 湖, sagami-ko) – A popular place to see summer fireworks.
- 2 Imperial mausoleum (多 摩 御 陵 tamagoryō, 武 蔵 陵墓 地 musashiryōbochi) – The site where Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) and his predecessor Emperor Taishō (Yoshihito) were buried.
- 3 Tric Art Museum (高 尾 山 ト リ ッ ク ア ー ト 子術館, takaosan torikku āto bijutsukan) (To 01 min from Takaosanguchi station) – It is an interesting museum, with many unique works and photographs.
- 4 Traces of Hachiōji Castle (八 王子 子, hachiōji-jō) – These are the remains of a fiercely contested place during the Warring Provinces Period (Sengoku). From the viewpoint at the top of the mountain you can see Sagami Bay.
- Sengen Shrine (浅 間 神社 sengen jinja) (To 10 min walk from Keiō Horinouchi station) – Many festivals take place there, in particular the great summer festival.
- Hōkyōintō (宝) (from Keiō horinouchi station) – This is the tomb of Matsugi Shichiro (松木 七郎), a samurai from the Kamakura era. The name Matsugi district comes from him.
- 5 Fujimidai Park (富士 見 台 公園 Fujimidai kōen) (to Keiō-Horinouchi station) – The largest park around the station. On weekends, many families come to picnic. People come here to throw baseballs or with their dog. In spring, it is famous for seeing its many cherry blossoms.
- 6 Nagaike Park (長 池 公園 nagaike-kōen) Bessho 2-58 – This large park is full of greenery and you can enjoy birdsong. Lots of people come there on weekends. In addition, there are Japanese rice fields (tambo) and a water mill. There is a large pond called "nagaike ”(Lit.“ long pond ”). There is a sad legend of a princess who lived 100 years ago and died in this pond because her husband had died in war (a custom once made in Japan that when the husband died, the wife had to also die).

- 1 Mount Takao (高 尾 山) (since Shinjuku, take a Keiō Line express or semi-express train to Takaosan-guchi Station (高 尾 山口, 47 min, 470 JPY), the last stop. Note that not all trains leaving from Shinjuku go there. With some semi-express trains, it will be necessary to change at Kitano for a local train going to Takaosan-guchi, which is still convenient.) – A high peak of 600 m easily accessible by funicular or chairlift followed by a hike, giving a little taste of nature in Tokyo. It is popular in the fall to see the colors of the leaves change, but spring is also a good time as you can see many pretty cherry blossoms.
- Just outside the station, a large map shows the hiking trails in the area. The first part of the trail is steep, but it can be avoided with a funicular or a chairlift (06 min/470 JPY, 900 JPY round trip). When the funicular arrives there are shops selling food and souvenirs. There is also a Monkey Park (高 尾 山 サ ル 園, takao-san saru-en ; adults 400 JPY, children 200 JPY), a kind of zoo where you can see a performance (in Japanese) and learn about Japanese macaques. There is also a beer garden offering unlimited options (food and drink) for 3 000 JPY, a welcome reward for a round trip hike of a few hours. From there it's a walk of 50 min approx to the top of Takao-san (高 尾 山頂). Having said that, there are many less traveled routes that might take longer but are more scenic. On the main route (path 1) there are shrines and more food vendors. The entire path is paved, although there are a few steep stairs in some spots.

Hachiōji includes more than 20 universities and technical schools. There are 10 public high schools, 37 middle schools, numerous primary schools and a good number of private schools and universities.

There are many restaurants along Tama Newtown Street (ex: sushi, fast food, udon, Chinese noodles). The area is particularly famous for Chinese noodles, with many establishments.

Cheap
There are many love hotels near JR / Keio Hachiōji stations, and they can even be found in less populated places and mountainous areas. Normally they charge on an hour or two hour basis, but they are known to have a cheap full night rate. If you want to walk on the west side of Tokyo (like Hachiōji, Machida, and some areas on the mountainside), you are better off staying near Tama Center Station or Tachikawa Station.
