Heitersheim is a small town in Markgräflerland at the transition to the southern Breisgau.

background

The region around Heitersheim was already settled in the Bronze Age, as the first traces of settlement show. The Romans also settled here, like the remains of the Villa Urbana occupy. Around AD 600 followed them by the Alemanni and the Franks. A first written mention of the place comes from the year 777. In the 13th century the place came into the possession of the Johanniter and in their succession the Maltese. In 1806 Heitersheim became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden, and in 1810 it received city rights. During the municipal reform in 1971, the formerly independent town of Gallenweiler was incorporated.

Neighboring towns of Heitersheim are Eschbach, Bad Krozingen, Staufen, Ballrechte-Dottingen, Buggingen and Neuchâtel, they are all in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.
