Staufen was first mentioned in a document in 770. The name of the place refers to that Lords of Staufen, they were servants of the princely dynasty of the Zähringer, but not related to the Staufer sex. After the death of the last Staufen, the place came under the rule of the Habsburgs. In 1806 Staufen came to the Grand Duchy of Baden.
A famous resident of the place was a certain one Johann Georg Faust, Astrologer, alchemist and magician. He is said to have died in an explosion in the Löwen inn in 1539. There are a number of legends about his person, the best known is probably the pact between Faust and Mephisto, that of Goethe in the drama Faust I. has been processed.
Staufen gained less prominence through Uplift cracks in the historic old town. In an attempt to heat the town hall with geothermal energy, exploratory boreholes were drilled in 2007. Through the boreholes, groundwater entered a layer of gypsum keuper. Due to their swelling, the area rose and the historic buildings developed cracks. This process has not yet come to a complete standstill, and the economic consequences have not yet been clarified.
The city of Staufen includes the districts of Grunern and Wettelbrunn as well as a number of hamlets and farms. Neighboring communities are Bad Krozingen, Ehrenkirchen, Munster Valley, Sulzburg, Ballrechte-Dottingen and Heitersheim, they are all in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.
