Neuchâtel was founded in 1175 by the Zähringern founded. As early as 1213 it was raised to the status of a free imperial city. In 1311 the city became part of Upper Austria, in 1806 Neuchâtel became Baden. The formerly independent communities of Steinenstadt, Grißheim and Zienken have belonged to Neuchâtel since 1975, and now officially Neuchâtel on the Rhine called.
Before the Rhine was straightened out, the city repeatedly had to struggle with devastating floods, and the situation on the border with France repeatedly led to destruction, as last happened in the war years 1940 and 1945.
Neighboring cities and towns are Hartheim, Eschbach, Heitersheim, Buggingen, Muellheim, Eyes, Schliengen and Bad Bellingen. To the west of the Rhine lie the Alsatian Communes of Chalampé, Ottmarsheim and Bantzenheim.
