Indonesia has more than 400 volcanoes, 130 of which are considered active, and several of them are submarines. the island of New Guinea (in which the Indonesian province of papua) is the 2nd largest in the world.
Provinces are usually grouped around larger islands, and include the smaller surrounding islands. The list below follows this practice, except with Bali, which is dealt with separately on Wikivoyage.
Sumatra (incl. the Riau Islands and Bangka-Belitung) Wild, the 6th largest island in the world has enormous natural and cultural wealth, with more than 40 million inhabitants. Habitat of many endangered species. |
Kalimantan (Borneo) Much of the 3rd largest island on the planet is this Indonesian province. Mapless jungles, huge rivers, home of the orangutan, adventurer's paradise. |
Java (and mature) The heart of the country, big cities including the capital jakarta, and a lot of people packed on a not very big island. Also the cultural treasures of Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Prambanan. |
Bali By far Indonesia's most popular destination, Bali has unique culture, legendary beaches and spectacular mountain regions that make it a perennial favorite with backpackers everywhere. Administratively part of Nusa Tenggara. |
Sulawesi (Celebes) Diversity of societies and spectacular scenery, culture Torah, wealth of flora and fauna, world class diving sites. |
Nusa Tenggara (Lombok including the Gili Islands, Sumbawa, Flowers, Komodo and West Timor) known as Lesser Sunda Islands, the "Southeast Islands", contain dozens of ethnic groups, languages & religions, dragons of Komodo and more spectacular diving. |
maluku (Moluccas) the histories Spice Islands, disputed until today, unexplored and almost unknown to the outside world. |

Despite the large list of accidents recorded in the history of Indonesian aviation, this means of transport remains the most suitable for those who want to avoid wasting time. The road, rail and waterway structure presents greater risks, slowness and stress. The main airline in the country is Garuda Indonesia, with relatively high prices compared to other companies operating in the country, which does not change the accessibility to tourists, who generally have a stronger currency than the Indonesian rupee. Headquartered at Jakarta International Airport, the airline operates international and domestic flights (including Denpasar Airport in Bali).
