The area was already inhabited in the pre-Nuragic, Nuragic and Roman times, due to the presence on the territory of various archaeological remains.

During the Middle Ages it belonged to the Giudicato of Gallura and was part of the curatoria of OroseiIn 1296, with the death of the last judge Nino Visconti, the territory passed under the direct control of the republic of Pisa, and subsequently, in 1323, under the Aragonese dominion. At that time Irgoli was incorporated into the barony of Orosei, a fief regio, whose fate and history he shared until the redemption occurred in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system.

From 1927 to 1946 he formed together with Galtellì, Loculi is Onifai, a single municipal entity, "Irgoli - Galtellì".
