Isère is a department in the French region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The département, ordinal number 38. Isère borders the départements Rhône, Ain in the North, Savoie in the East, Hautes-Alpes and Drôme in the south, Ardeche and Loire in the West.

The Isère includes part of the French Alps. The highest point in the department is the summit of La Meije at 3,987 meters. The Vercors plateau lies between Grenoble and Valence. The western part is already in Rhône Valley.
