Isola dei Pescatori (also Upper island), is the only island of the archipelago of Borromean Islands of the Lake Maggiore (municipality of Stresa) to be permanently inhabited.

To know

The patron saint of the island is the Madonna dei Pescatori.

Geographical notes

Isola dei Pescatori is exposed to the "four winds". On the Lake Maggiore, the winds have their name that distinguishes them by origin: the Mergozzo it comes from the nearby lake of the same name and runs along the western shore; the Major blows impetuously from the Switzerland on the eastern shore; the inverna moving in the opposite direction to the Mergozzo, slightly ripples the lake and is said to bring good weather.

The best time to visit the island is spring and summer, in fact both restaurants and hotels close for the winter period.A phenomenon that occurs periodically (usually in autumn and spring) is that of high water. Following abundant rainfall, the level of the lake rises and the water invades the shore promenade until it touches the houses.

Background

Isola dei Pescatori is exactly called Isola Superiore dei Pescatori as it was the first in the Archipelago to be inhabited; a bishop's decree dated 1627 the island was called Insella or Insula Superior, distinguishing itself from the nearby Insula Inferior (Beautiful island) still uninhabited. It is the only island in the gulf that does not belong to the Borromean heritage. The island is essentially a characteristic inhabited village.

Territories and tourist destinations

Isola dei Pescatori is quite small, it has only two roads, one that circumnavigates the island and an internal one that leads to the church of San Vittore.

Events and parties

The islanders still retain some of their traditional festivals. The most famous is that of Ferragosto which ends in the evening with the procession of illuminated fishing boats carrying the beautiful statue of the Assumption around the island.
