Khao San Road - Khao San Road

Khao San Road (ถนน ข้าวสาร) is a small street in the town of Bangkok located north of Rattanakosin.

To know

The word khao san it means "ground rice" and the name has been attributed to the historical role this street had in the rice industry. The first business to open on Khao San Road was a small hotel aimed at civil servants who came from the provinces to work in the city. This hotel was then followed by Sor Thambhakdi, an accessories shop for monks. Four other similar shops followed and it became famous as a "religious street".

The kindness of the locals and the ease of everyday life spread by word of mouth and not long afterward the homeowners began charging 20 baht for food and sleep. The first commercial guest house named Bonny opened in 1982 and had only six rooms.

Today the offer is much larger. The hippy and relaxed atmosphere, the cheapness of the street has given way to a more commercial and tourism-focused atmosphere. Within a couple of blocks you will find bars, street restaurants, massage shops, tailors, travel agencies, laundromats, gyms, opticians, suspicious shops and rooms for sleeping at night.

Confusion spread throughout the area including Soi Rambuttri with its small bars and restaurants, Phra Athit Road with its hotels and villas on the river e Samsen Road, a quiet neighborhood with nice guest houses and vegetarian restaurants. It is definitely a tourist destination and may not be too safe at night as there have been cases of assaults and thefts.

How to orient yourself

Khao San Road can be reached easily from all parts of Bangkok. Express ferry services, buses and taxis are the main options as there are no metro or skytrain connections. However, keep in mind that this area is quite far from the other tourist areas of the city, such as Sukhumvit or Silom, which takes 30-60 minutes to reach.

How to get

By ferry

The express ferry service Chao Phraya Express Boat it is the cheapest and most scenic way to get to Khao San Road. If you are coming from the city center, take the skytrain to the station instead Saphan Taksin from which you change to the ferry on the pier of Sathorn and with a ride of 35 minutes you arrive at the pier of Phra Arthit, for a cost ranging from 13 to 18 baht. Be sure to take the line with the orange or blue flag; the yellow flag skips the Phra Arthit stop.

If you are staying in this area, the easiest way to get to Rattanakosin is Silom, is with the ferry. The walk from Khao San Road to Phra Arthit Pier is short but confusing. First walk towards the police station on Khao San Road and then take the right to Chakrabongse Road and immediately left to Soi Rambuttri. Then walk until you have to turn left and then take Soi Chana Songkhram on the right. At the end, turn right onto Phra Athit Road, cross the road and look for the small sign for the express ferry dock, near the Navalai River Resort. It is advisable to bring a good map and have a good sense of orientation, otherwise it is advisable to install applications on portable devices that allow the use of "offline" maps based on Openstreetmap.

The most important piers are Tha Chang (for the Grand Palace), Tha Tien (for Wat Pho) e Rachawongse (for Yaowarat). All lines stop at the pier of Sathorn from which you can change to the skytrain to go to Silom, Siam Square, Sukhumvit is Phahonyothin. The end of the runs for the express ferry service is at 18:00 or 19:00 depending on the day.

The fastest (although not the most comfortable) way to go from Khao San Road to Siam Square, Sukhumvit and Ramkhamhaeng it is with the express ferry service Saen Saep Express Boat. The closest pier to Khao San Road is Panfa Leelard which is close to the Golden Mount and Wat Ratchanadda temple, from which you can take the Golden Mount Line which is a direct boat service to Pratunam from which you can change to the NIDA Line that goes all the way north to the temple Wat Sriboonreung in Ramkhamhaeng. A ride from Panfa Leelard to Pratunam takes 20 minutes and costs 11 baht. During the journey you will pass the stops Talat Bobae (for the clothing market of the same name), Sapan Charoenpol, Baan Krua Nua (for Jim Thompson's house), Sapan Hua Chang (for Siam Square) e Pratunam (for Pratunam and Ratchaprasong).

By bus

The bus transport system is very complex and for some destinations you don't have a choice as Khao San Road is not connected to the Skytrain. These are some useful bus lines for traveling to and from Khao San Road:

• The bus 2 runs from Sukhumvit Road to Sanam Luang, via Ratchdamnoen Klang Road, very close to Khao San Road. The route is useful for connecting with the Skytrain, the metro and the Ekkamai Bus East Terminal. The route also passes by Pratunam. Cost 6-7 baht.
• The bus 3 with air conditioning goes to the North Bus Terminal Mo Chit via Chakrabongse Road, on the west side of Khao San Road. The ride costs 7 baht and takes about 30 minutes.
• The bus 15 runs from Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (near Khao San Road) to Siam Square.
• The bus 53 runs from Phra Athit Road near the Express Ferry Pier, to Hualampong Station, following an interesting intricate route through Rattanakosin and Yaowarat. It costs 7 baht and takes 30 minutes or more, depending on traffic.
• The bus 511 crosses the city from Ekkamai East Bus Terminal via Sukhumvit and Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (near Khao San Road) to Sai Tai South Bus Terminal. Please note that the non-express line bus passes through Ratchdamnoen Klang Road while the express line (with yellow signs) does not pass.
• The bus 509 air-conditioned departing from Mo Chit Bus Terminal via Victory Monument (Skytrain BTS stop) and Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (near Khao San Road) ending at Bang Khae at Thonburi .

A cheaper and more laborious option to get from the airport is to use the local buses. From the airport, take the free shuttle bus just outside exit 5 (both upstairs and downstairs) for the Public Transport Interchange. From there you take the bus 551 (which is a white van) which will drop off at the Victory Monument for 40 baht. Then take the bus 59 and go down between Khao San Road and the Victory Monument. To go to the airport take the 59 which starts from Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, between Khao San Road and the Victory Monument (look for the half-turned plane symbol on the bus stop). You go down to the Victory Monument from where you take the 551 for the Public Transport Interchange. From there it is a short ride on the shuttle bus to the terminals.

Khao San Road is also the stop for most of the long-distance buses from Chang Mai, northern Thailand and Siem Reap in Cambodia, as it is located outside the center and can thus avoid the famous Bangkok traffic.

By taxi

Some taxis will try to charge a single amount of 200-300 baht to take you to Khao San Road instead of referring to the taximeter which instead will indicate no more than 80 baht from Silom or 100-150 baht from Sukhumvit or 60-80 baht from the station. Hualampong. The driver will try to claim that Khao San Road is "too far" for the meter but of course this is not true. It goes without saying that in case this happens, just get off and find a more honest taxi driver, it won't be difficult, Bangkok is full of taxis.

Generally speaking older taxi drivers are more inclined to use the meter while younger ones tend to shoot tourist figures. Parked taxis should also be avoided because dishonest taxi drivers prefer to wait for their prey, and instead take a taxi on the go. A red light on the dashboard indicates that the taxi is available. Most taxis are new (less than two years old) and older taxis are best avoided because air conditioning is likely to work poorly and taxi drivers tend to be less reliable. Most taxi drivers are honest anyway, so it's always a better option than the tuk-tuk.

To get to or from the airport, the taxi is by far the easiest and fastest way to reach Khao San Road. A metered taxi should cost 300-450 baht and a toll road fee of up to 65 baht is in addition to the ride. Traffic during the day makes sense of the toll road, saving a lot of time and money. With medium traffic the route should take around 45 minutes but during rush hour leave yourself a good margin as Khao San Road can be bottled up. If you arrive after midnight you can expect to pay 500 baht, which includes tolls, the airport tax of 50 baht and the meter. During the night taxis are the only option as the Airport Rail Link train stops traveling at midnight.

How to get around

What see

Although there are no famous historical sites, Khao San is part of Rattanakosin and it is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Bangkok. Around this street there are various shops and temples to consider. In addition to the interesting architecture, the area displays a mixture of people and cultural heritages that is typical of Bangkok. There are Buddhists, Chinese, Muslims, Burmese and of course a large number of foreigners, especially in this part of the city which makes this neighborhood very interesting to get a glimpse of everyday Thai life.

• 13.75669100.501851 Democracy Monument (อนุสาวรีย์ ประชาธิปไตย), Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (at the intersection of Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and Dinso Road). Free. It completely occupies a roundabout on a main road. The peculiarity of this monument are the four wings arranged at a symmetrical distance with respect to a small central temple. The wings are decorated with works that refer to war events. Very impressive when viewed from afar, especially at sunrise and sunset but it's not worth the risk of crossing five lanes of a busy road to see it up close. Celebrates the coup d'état of June 1932 that brought the country to the first democratic constitution in place of an absolute monarchy. Demonstrators gathered here in 1973, 1976 and 1992 during the struggles for democracy which therefore give this monument a great weight in the modern history of Thailand. 
• 13.75678100.499082 Memorial of 14 October (อนุสรณ์ สถาน 14 ตุลา), 14/16 Ratchadamnoen Klang Road (At the intersection of Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and Tanao Road). Free. October 14, 1973 is one of the most important dates in the modern history of Thailand. Millions of pro-democracy Protestants gathered at Ratchadamnoen Klang Road against the military dictatorship of Thanom Kittikachorn. The junta attacked the masses with snipers stationed on the rooftops killing dozens of civilians. The regime was then overthrown and Thailand became a constitutional monarchy. This memorial commemorates those who died that day as well as those who died in similar protests in 1976 and 1992. More information about this hectic period can be found in the small museum. 
• 13.76399100.495733 Fort Phra Sumen (ป้อม พระสุเมรุ), Phra Athit Road (inside the Santichaiprakan park). Free. Fort Phra Sumen is one of the two remaining towers of the historic city walls that once completely surrounded Rattanakosin Island (the other being the Mahakan Fort). The historic walls had 14 of these watchtowers but twelve of which have not survived the test of time. Fort Sumen was built in 1783 during the reign of King Rama I to protect the city from possible foreign naval invasions. The fort has a lookout tower and two levels of parapet with the original guns still in place.

Mon-Sun 05: 00-22: 00. this small very green park has a beautiful view of the Chao Phraya River and the modern Rama VIII suspension bridge. There is an open pavilion, Fort Sumen and the last two trees lamphu of the neighborhood (these trees were once everywhere in Banglamphu, from which the district derives its name). The park's activities are varied and include Thai classical music, jugglers (at 6pm) and aerobics exercises. Furthermore, the park has now become a meeting point for breakdancers who compete to improve their technique.

So there is something to see on Khao San Road and no wonder it's an art gallery. This colonial-style building has many paintings on display, many of them in a kind of traditional Thai style. The gallery is quite small but very nice for a quick visit. 

• 13.76025100.499856 Wat Bowonniwet temple (วัด บวร นิเวศ), Bowonniwet Road (At the corner of Bowonniwet Road and Phra Sumen Road), ☎ 66 2 281 2831. Free. Mon-Sun 08: 00-17: 00. Built in 1829 it is in fact the hall temple of Phra Phutthachinnasi, a beautiful Buddha image created around 1375. One of the most important temples in Bangkok and before he ascended the throne, King Rama IV was once abbot of it. Kings Rama IV and Rama VII and His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej ruled here during their monasticism. You have to take off your shoes to visit it but be careful when the sun is at its peak as the floor could be hot and wearing socks might be a good idea.

Centuries ago, following a war against the Burmese, the Thai government ceded land to a group of people from the Mon ethnic minority, who fought alongside the Thais, who established a community and built this temple, also known as the Temple of the Victory in War. Many travelers use this temple area as a shortcut between Khao San Road and Phra Athit Road, where the ferry dock is located. However, the temple is worth a visit: it has beautiful murals, beautiful bells, Bougainvillea plants and beautiful trees. You don't pay an entrance fee and everyone is welcome to pay homage to Buddha images or just to rest away from the crowds of Kaho San Road. 

What to do

The activities on Khao San Road are not very classy. There are many travelers relaxing in a bar drinking a Chang beer and watching friends go by. Watching people go by is the most common activity practiced in many bars and streets around. And when you are too stressed by all this activity there are many massage rooms in which to unload the heaviness of the day.

There are many places around Khao San Road where you can washing clothes. The fare is typically 25-40 baht per kilo and can be collected the following day. Some laundromats even offer same day pickup if you bring your clothes before 3pm.

The Rambuttri Village Inn offers the service luggage storage for 20 baht a day.

If you are not staying on Kaho San Road i bathrooms they are hard to find. There is a fairly neat one inside Buddy's Shopping Plaza: you go inside and turn right before entering the Brick Bar, it costs 5 baht and there are usually long queues at night. Another public bathroom is located on Sunset Street, after the Starbucks on the left. Cost 5 baht. You can also try Burger King on the east side of the road.

Lessons last half a day and begin with a demonstration after which you can start cooking at your station. Classes are relatively small limited to a maximum of eight people. At the end of the lesson you can eat the food prepared in an informal setting. The course ends with a certificate of recognition.

Interested parties must give at least one day's notice but you can try your luck by showing up at the morning session to see if there is room. The school also has a restaurant with many vegetarian dishes and a gueshouse next door.

Put on the pads and if all this is too heavy you can even sit on a bench and watch the workout. This will save you 1,000 baht for the end-of-training match. 

Shopping

Obviously the first place to go for shopping is Khao San Road itself. There are shops one after the other that sell dresses, T-shirts, skirts, accessories, shoes and bags usually at bargain prices. Many of these products are "vintage", which is very popular among the visitors to the area. There are also souvenir and craft shops.

There are women dressed in traditional hill tribe costumes walking up and down the road all day usually making the croaking sound of their ornamental frogs. They constantly approach tourists trying to sell accessories, hammocks and ethnic handicrafts. They are quite nice and leave with a simple refusal but if they sense that you are interested they will crowd in trying to sell something.

Always be careful of getting ripped off. Never buy anything of value as there are many scams in this area. Khao San Road has many silverware wholesalers but don't buy from them. The most common scam is to charge the price of a stone many times its true value. There are also hookers who will try to sell a man's suit to strollers, but never buy from them as the quality is so poor compared to what they will charge. If you really run away to buy a dress it is better to go downtown, but honestly as Italians, what need do we have to buy cheap clothes when we travel?

Other problematic products are fake clothes, pirated films and fake diplomas. The authorities here don't care much about the problem but you can run into serious problems once you land at the airport on your way home. The 13.7608100.497955 Banglamphu Market north of Khao San Road, it's a good place to buy all kinds of fakes, from jeans to fake Italian shoes. However, there are also good Thai silk shops. Food stalls are also plentiful.

Books

Many travelers use this road as a starting point to head to the beaches and therefore various second-hand book shops are open today. Expect very dusty shops with completely worn books, but prices are generally cheaper than elsewhere. Some of the newer stores look better and also sell new books. The titles in vogue are more or less always present and if you do not want to read novels, you can opt for those of Thai or Asian history and culture. Some stores have a buy-back scheme that allows you to resell your purchased book to the store at half the purchase price after your trip is over.

They have a good selection of titles on the history of Southeast Asian countries. Of course they also have the usual novels, travel guides and maps. They also have sections dedicated to different foreign languages: Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Swedish and more. The staff is kind and more helpful than in other shops. When you buy a book it will be marked so that you can resell it when you have finished reading.

Mon-Sun 10 am-7pm. Big shop much more professional than the others on this street. Many of the clients are Thai students who come for English language, art and history academic books. They also have general interest books such as travel guides.

The largest book on Khao San Road, very dusty and looks uninteresting but has the largest selection of used books. It has the usual novels and classics in English but also a selection of books on religion, meditation and culture. Some shelves have books in Dutch, German, Spanish and Scandinavian. The staff seem disinterested so it is worthwhile to browse for their own facts. They also have a second branch on Susie Walking Street

How to have fun

Cafeterias

You might want fresh coffee in the morning or coconut juice or iced chocolate to combat the afternoon heat. There are many options on Kaho San Road. Coffee World it's across from the McDonald's in the Buddy's Shopping Plaza and there is one Starbucks (if you really feel like hurting yourself with bad coffee) in an old house on Sunset Street.

For the more sophisticated and recommended options, head to Phra Athit Road for decent cafes, where you will find many colonial-style homes and malls that have been converted into artsy cafes and restaurants.

There are various Ricky's Coffee Shops but this is the original. Good place to relax with a cup of coffee (or a cold beer in the afternoon). They also have Thai and Western dishes and despite the simple look they are very flavorful. Try the rice with cashews. You can also try the sandwiches, which are good. The décor is impressive and is a bit like an old Chinese tea house. 

Bars and pubs

Khao San Road has some of the cheapest bars in the city and now Thais also frequent these places that focus on tranquility, sitting outside watching the world go by and being part of a good atmosphere. Some instead decide to walk with a beer in hand, which costs only 25baht at 7-Eleven. VolksWagen vans converted into mobile bars serving cocktails made with cheap spirits are worth a visit.

Tourists can also be found north on Soi Rambuttri and Rambuttri Road which have a slow pace ideal for people watching. The bars have plenty of chairs lined up outside and the music is kept low for a way to talk. If you want to go where the locals go, there are a few bars on Phra Athit Road and Ratchadamnoen Klang Road which are popular with art students.

Big and dark, it is usually packed to the brim. Pop music played on the speakers. Very popular with Thais. The owner also owns Austin Pub, Tom Yum Kung and The Club. Don't forget to bring your documents as they are sometimes checked at the entrance.

Bar with blues music and there is always a band playing on stage, so it is a must visit if you are a fan of the genre. It is still a good experience for everyone, with a very intimate atmosphere and very tight spaces.

Thursday is very busy while Friday and Saturday is full. A Chang beer costs 70 baht but the locals seem to drink scotch whiskey or cocktails.

Live concerts of ska and reggae music. The furniture is old western style. Very popular with Thais and very busy on weekends. They check the documents at the entrance.

Probably the largest club located just halfway down the street, with chairs along the sidewalk. Always open, it is a great place to stop for a chat, have a beer and forget the time that passes. Il miglior momento in cui arrivare sono le 21:00 quando comincia la serata.

Fuori ci sono molte sedie ed è un ottimo posto per vedere la gente che passa.

L'area al piano di sotto è molto rilassata e proprio accanto alla strada, quindi è un ottimo posto per guardare la gente che passa e chiacchierare. Non c'è musica sotto anche se l'atmosfera è comunque buona e della musica arriva dall'altra parte della strada. Al piano di sopra invece c'è il grande pub irlandese nel quale spesso ci sono concerti dal vivo.

Se mette i dischi DJ Chicken allora saprete che sarà una buona serata, altrimenti si può guardare il calcio sui grandi schermi o giocare a biliardo.

Un altro posto dal quale si può guardare la gente passare. I tavoli esterni vanno bene per chiacchierare e guardare chi passa fumando, se ci va, una shisha. Si può anche sedere all'interno ma è più difficile parlare in quanto la musica è ad alto volume. Bell'arredamento con decorazioni in stile tradizionale thailandese. Ci sono molte birre e cocktail tra i quali scegliere oltre a qualche piatto thailandese.

Ogni giorno dopo il tramonto questo posto si riempie di clienti con l'intenzione di divertirsi fino a notte. Situato all'interno di un vicolo, da qui si fa fatica a vedere la strada anche se sul balcone la situazione migliora. La sera un DJ mette i dischi e la musica è piuttosto alta e non è possibile parlare. Servono anche alcuni piatti thailandesi.

Pubblicizzato come ristorante nel quale si possono mangiare piatti thailandesi, italiani, e grigliate sulla fascia di prezzo attorno agli 80-130 baht. L'attrazione principale comunque sono i posti a sedere fuori, allineati sulla strada principale che rendono questo posto buono per passare il tempo a chiacchierare e guardare il calcio sui grandi schermi. Le birre e i cocktail qui sono un po' più economici che su Khao San Road: una birra Chang grande costa 80 baht. L'interno è piuttosto malmesso.

Di fascia più alta rispetto ad altri bar/ristorante su Kaho San Road, si trova in una piccola corte lontano dalla strada che lo rende un buon posto per fuggire dalla confusione. La corte e l'edificio sono in stile europeo-mediterraneo. Servono caffè e birre oltre a piatti thailandesi e internazionali. Il Giovedì e la Domenica ci sono concerti dal vivo.

Lun-Dom 18:00-01:00. All'inizio la gente del posto non era interessata allo squallido ghetto per stranieri che è Khao San Road ma poi a recuperato fama anche tra gli artistoidi locali. Tak Sura è uno dei posti in cui si ritrovano i thailandesi, in particolare gli studenti delle vicine facoltà umanistiche. Il posto è un palazzo vecchio più di cento anni anche se gran parte dei clienti siede fuori. Piuttosto difficile da trovare in quanto è nascosto in un vicolo con indicazioni soltanto in thailandese. 

Discoteche

La vita notturna di Bangkok se la passa male riguardo al mantenere la sua reputazione, in particolare Khao San Road. Molti bar rimangono aperti tutto il giorno ma le discoteche chiudono alle 02:00. Portarsi sempre con sé il passaporto perché lo chiederanno all'ingresso. Gran parte delle persone che frequentano questi posti sono viaggiatori, quindi si vedranno molte infradito in giro. Altrimenti per vedere una folla più classica ci si dovrà allontanare da Khao San Road. Si può prendere un taxi per andare al Route 66 sulla Royal City Avenue(RCA) o al Funky Villa nel distretto di Thongolo.

Rimane comunque senza pretese e tranquillo ma ci si diverte molto se si è amanti dell'hip-hop, house e techno. Non è mai troppo pieno in quanto lontano dalla strada principale, a meno che ci sia un evento speciale.

Una delle migliori discoteche di Khao San Road e non si può non vedere perché ha un'insegna al neon viola enorme. Discoteca in stile Ibiza con arredamento in stile italiano. Potrebbe essere un po' troppo pretenziosa per noi occidentali, ma i thailandesi ne vanno matti e ci vengono in grandi gruppi. La musica suonata è house, electro, techno e trance.

Lun-Dom 21:00-02:00. Quando aprì era su Si Ayutthaya Road ma nel 2010 si è spostato qui. La sua attuale posizione è piuttosto strana, lontano da Khao San Road in un bel palazzo di quattro piani. Questa è una delle discoteche principali di Bangkok che ha quattro sale separate che suonano diversi tipi di musica, anche se non tutte possono essere aperte, dipende da quanta gente c'è.

La caratteristica di questa discoteca sono i suoi interni con luci stroboscopiche e colorate. Sembra di stare in una sala VIP con bar perché l'attività preferita qui è quella di sedere sui divanetti piuttosto che ballare. C'è un tavolo da biliardo e DJ che mettono dischi. Le finestre hanno una buona vista sul palazzo che ospita Starbucks. 

Where to eat

Khao San road offre alcune delle più economiche e variegate selezioni di cibo a Bangkok. Viaggiatori da tutto il mondo frequentano questa strada quindi c'è una forte domanda per ogni sorta di cibo etnico. Oltre ai soliti piatti thailandesi sono rappresentate le cucine indiana, italiana, ebraica e vegetariana.

Le bancarelle di cibo sulla strada cucinano del pad thai decente (spaghetti noodles fritti), uova di quaglia, roti (una specie di frittella), falafel, hummus, insetti vari oppure cocktail. Da tenere presente che tutto è preparato per i viaggiatori con pochi soldi e quindi per tenere i prezzi molto bassi risparmiano sugli ingredienti, ad esempio per il pad thai usano la salsa di soia invece della salsa di tamarindo.

Durante gli anni però anche questa strada è cambiata e si sta lasciando alle spalle il passato da strada per fricchettoni, quindi anche i prezzi si stanno adeguando (alzando). Negli ultimi dieci anni molte catene internazionali hanno aperto delle succursali qui, compresi Burger King, McDonald's e Subway. Altri ristoranti di medio livello sono aperti ogni giorno ma non aspettatevi grande qualità. Per coloro che sono in cerca di buona qualità del cibo è consigliabile cercare in altre zone della città.

Parte di una catena internazionale di cibo Chassidico con più di 2.000 succursali in tutto il mondo. Ideale per ebrei in viaggio che mangiano kosher. Gran menu di carne con l'opportunità di assaggiare ricette thailandesi in stile kosher oppure prendere una schnitzel (cotoletta) con hummus. Qualcosa di diverso dal solito pad thai che si trova in ogni angolo di strada. Hanno anche una sinagoga (servizio giornaliero alle 10:00) e un piccolo negozio nel quale si possono acquistare zuppe liofilizzate, matza e altri delizie kosher.

Uno dei ristoranti vegetariani della zona che sfama gli hippie dal 1988. Ordinare è semplice in quanto si può indicare la foto del piatto dal menu laminato. Da provare l'insalata di papaya. Il ristorante May Kaidee's 3, dello stesso proprietario, è dall'altra parte di Soi Bowonrangsi a soli centro metri da qui.

Mr. Yim ha dovuto andarsene dal suo edificio ed adesso vende come bancarella permanente sullo stesso angolo di strada utilizzando le mura del tempio come mura posteriori del suo "ristorante". Buon rapporto qualità/prezzo con una grande selezione di prodotti di qualità comprese opzioni vegetariane. Le grandi baguette e la colazione valgono la pena di essere provate.

Una caffetteria inglese moderna e molto pulita. È all'interno della corte in mattoni all'ingresso del Rambuttri Village Inn, dove il rumore del vicolo sfuma. Molto cibo disponibile: hamburger, bistecche, pesce, patatine fritte e uova. Possono anche fare ordini speciali su richiesta. Ci sono dei televisori al plasma e il personale è gentile.

Un tipico ristorante di Khao San Road, ovvero un ristorante di strada con sedie di plastica rossa e tavoli gialli. Conosciuto dai viaggiatori per l'ottimo pesce, soprattutto quello grigliato. È anche un buon posto dove incontrare altri viaggiatori zaino in spalla mentre si beve una birra economica (solo 50 baht per una bottiglia grande). Le sera è molto frequentato.

Questa mangeria ultra popolare è una delle poche nella zona che serve cibo thailandese musulmano, come il roti, il mataba (una specie di frittella ripiena) e il curry massaman. La migliore esperienza "locale" si ha sedendosi al piano di sotto dove si odora il cibo che viene preparato stando molto stretti. Al piano di sopra c'è l'aria condizionata ed è più comodo. Le portate sono piuttosto piccole quindi se si ha fame è consigliabile ordinare due o più piatti.

Il riso fritto con il curry verde è buono.

Eccellente se si vuol guardare la gente passare sedendosi vicino al marciapiede. La musica è forse un po' troppo alta e ci sono anche delle stanze se si vuole rimanere a dormire per 700-1000 baht.

In confronto agli altri ristoranti si mangia poco per quello che si paga ma almeno si ha la vista su Khao San Road.

I curry sono molto buoni e le porzioni sono sufficienti. Connessione Wi-Fi gratuita.

Molti dei loro piatti sono a basso contenuto di zucchero e grassi, quindi il tè thailandese non ha un gran sapore. I vegetariani adoreranno l'offerta del menù.

Piatti vegetariani eccellenti e ricette biologiche che anche gli inossidabili della carne potranno gustarsi. Da provare il curry ai funghi. Personale gentile e ci si sente un po' a casa. Il proprietario ha vissuto negli Stati Uniti e parla un buon inglese.

Il nome deriva dal piatto nazionale thailandese. L'insegna al neon gigante potrebbe sembrare un po' kitch ma il risotrante è uno dei classici e dei migliori della zona. La corte interna è arredata in stile tradizionale thailandese e non vi arriva il rumore della strada. Da provare sono i piatti thailandesi tradizionali, come il "tom yum" o il "som tam kung sod" o uno dei menu di pesce.

Lun-Dom 06:30-00:00 daily. Questo ristorante di lusso fa parte del Navalai River Resort e serve piatti thailandesi ed occidentali. Ha la vista sul fiume Chao Phraya. L'arredamento ha un tocco post moderno ma è meglio sedere fuori in quanto sulla terrazza si ha la vista migliore e la musica, gli alberi e il vento creano un ambiente tranquillo. I visitatori di questo posto sono soprattutto stranieri e il personale ti fa sentire proprio in un resort e in cucina sanno come fare le ricette per palati thailandesi. Da provare il tom kha kai.

Camerieri gentili servono piatti thailandesi, indiani e internazionali e da provare sono i classici thailandesi: tom yam, insalata di papaya o il pollo fritto col basilico. 

Where stay

Khao San Road è l'area principale per i viaggiatori zaino in spalla. Ogni mese aprono e chiudono nuove e vecchie guest house ed anche se dormire qui non è consigliato si trova sempre qualche posto economico. Gli hipster e i ricchi hanno cominciato a scoprire la strada che sta diventando sempre più un'area con alloggi ad ogni prezzo.

Prima di prendere una stanza in un posto che non si conosce, è sempre meglio chiedere vederla senza aver paura di controllare il funzionamento dell'aria condizionata, se si pensa che se ne avrà bisogno. Le guest house di Khao San Road non accettano ospiti thailandesi ed alcune non accettano nessun tipo di ospiti.

Moderate prices

Gran parte dei viaggiatori zaino in spalla si dirigono direttamente a Khao San Road perché ha le stanze più economiche della città. Non si deveono avere grandi aspettative però, in quanto gran parte di questi posti sono bui, squallidi e poco puliti con una buona probabilità di dormire su un materasso infestato dalle cimici. Da tenere a mente inoltre che le stanze saranno rumorose e se avranno la finestra sull'esterno, saranno molto calde.

Per stare un po' più tranquilli si può provare a spostarsi di un isolato. Soi Rambuttri, la piccola strada dopo la stazione di polizia ha delle guest house ragionevoli anche se potrebbe ancora essere rumorosa di notte. La strada diventa più buia e silenziosa avvicinandosi al tempio Wat Chana Songkhram. Samsen Road e la sua area circostante, è un'altra scappatoia dal rumore e il caos nella quale si trovano guest house economiche un po' più lontane dalla festa continua di Khao San Road.

Accesso ad internet non gratuito. Cibo e bevande disponibili nel ristorante al piano terra. Si sono sentiti dei lamenti riguardo ai gestori che sono antipatici e maleducati.

Le stanze economiche hanno solo il ventilatore, il bagno condiviso e nessuna finestra, mentre le più care hanno l'aria condizionata, il bagno in camera e balconi con vista sulla corte interna. Si può lasciare lo zaino in deposito qui per 10 baht al giorno, senza bisogno di essere un ospite dell'albergo per usufruire del servizio. Nelle stanze non c'è internet, ma solo nell'atrio. L'albergo è molto frequentato e si ha bisogno di prenotare in anticipo perché poche sono le possibilità di trovare una stanza se ci si presenta il giorno stesso.

Le stanze sono dei dormitori ma i bagni sono i più puliti tra tutta l'offerta di Khao San Road e c'è connessione Wi-Fi veloce e gratuita in tutto l'edificio. Il personale parla inglese e sono gentili e pronti ad aiutare 24/24. Ci si può rilassare nella loro caffetteria comoda e lussuosa.

Casa molto basica con piccole stanze, ma piuttosto economica e vicino a Khao San Road. Non hanno strutture se non una connessione Wi-Fi che non raggiunge tutte le stanze. I bagni potrebbero essere rotti e si potrebbe aver bisogno di un secchio per tirare l'acqua. Le docce delle stanze coi bagni comunque funzionano bene. Le porte vengono chiuse la notte, quindi si deve bussare forte per svegliare il proprietario per farvi entrare.

Si pubblicizzano dicendo che hanno le stanze più grandi al prezzo migliore e sembra che sia così. Le stanze sono pulite e ben mantenute e il personale è gentile. Ci sono cassette di sicurezza al piano terreno. Il menu del ristorante è semplice e il cibo non è il massimo ma i divani sono un buon posto per incontrare gente.

Connessione internet veloce e gratuita. Un buon posto nel quale rilassarsi, incontrare amici e prendere un caffè.

Per alcune stanze sul davanti il rumore potrebbe essere un problema ma i dormitori sul retro sono più silenziosi.

Il loro sito web dimentica di comunicare che chiude alle 18:00 pubblicando foto che fanno pensare diversamente. Hanno diverse tipologie di stanze, da semplici con ventilatore, a deluxe con aria condizionata. Il problema maggiore è il personale che non è per niente di aiuto neanche quando è colpa loro. Chiedono un deposito di 1.000 baht per la chiave pagabile solo con moneta sonante che verrà restituito quando si va via. Senza il deposito non vi lasceranno entrare in stanza anche se è già stata pagata. Non c'è un area comune ma c'è connessione Wi-Fi gratuita.

Altri servizi presenti sono lavanderia (costo al chilo) e deposito bagagli.

Accanto c'è un pub discoteca quindi c'è da aspettarsi molto rumore nelle stanze al piano inferiore.

Lontano abbastanza dalla folla ma vicino abbastanza per buttarcisi velocemente. Hanno anche molti altri servizi inclusi un ristorante, un'agenzia di viaggio e internet. 

Average prices

Ci sono molti alberghi dai prezzi medi in quest'area, con piscina, mini bar ecc. Questa fascia di prezzo copre un ampio spettro, dagli alberghi decenti a tre stelle fino alle guest house di alto livello. Phra Athit Road è un buon posto dove cominciare a guardare perché la sua posizione, accanto al fiume, ospita alcuni degli alberghi più lussuosi.

Connessione Wi-Fi disponibile in tutti i piani.

Il personale è gentile ed hanno una bella piscina ma a colazione la scelta è poca.

Uno dei pochi alberghi di questa fascia di prezzo che sta proprio su Khao San Road. Buone stanze con frigorifero, televisore, telefono ed aria condizionata. Una bella piscina sul tetto, balcone, servizio in camera, connessione Wi-Fi gratuita e bar. Si può anche usare la palestra per 200 baht al giorno.

Le stanze hanno tutti i servizi, compresi aria condizionata, televisione via cavo, bagni en-suite e accessori per il te e caffè. Non lasciate oggetti di valore in stanza comunque, perché bisogna fare attenzione al personale delle pulizie. Non ci sono cassette di sicurezza disponibili.

Il personale è molto di aiuto se si hanno questioni o problemi. Si raccomanda di prenotare sul loro sito in quanto i prezzi se ci si presenta all'ingresso, sono più alti.

Le stanze sono un po' piccole ma sempre pulite ed hanno la televisione via cavo, docce fredde o calde e ventilatori o aria condizionata. Le foto sul loro sito le mostrano più carine di quello che in realtà sono. La nota negativa è che c'è molto rumore che arriva dalle caffetterie vicine che si prolunga fino alle 04:00 se la stanza è vicino alla strada.

Se si possono spendere un po' più di soldi è consigliabile prenotare una stanza con vista sul fiume in quanto le altre hanno vista sulla strada. Le stanze sono silenziose e pulite. La colazione ha una grande varietà e il servizio è a buffet accanto alla piscina e con la vista sul fiume. Il ristorante può essere frequentato anche da ospiti esterni e i piatti principali costano 100 baht o meno.

Albergo di alto livello in una bellissima casa storica thailandese datata 1936. Le stanze frontali danno sulla strada molto frequentata ma è piuttosto silenzioso la notte. Le stanze sono pulite benissimo con bagno, aria condizionata, mini-bar e colazione compresa. Il personale è molto servizievole.

C'è connessione Wi-Fi che funziona all'interno delle stanze. Un ottimo ristorante al piano terreno, Aquatini, che si trova separato sulla zona est.

Quelle che si affacciano sulla strada possono essere rumorose a causa del bar. C'è una grande piscina. Il personale è ultra efficiente e gentile. Colazione ottima con grande offerta sia in quantità che in varietà di cucine.

Si può spedire e ricevere posta ad uno dei due uffici postali della zona 13.75785100.49986 Ratchadamnoen Post Office che si trova a pochi passi attraverso il vicolo dietro Burger King. Anche 13.76043100.499037 Banglamphubon Post Office non è lontano e si trova di fronte al tempio Wat Bowonniwet.
