Sukhumvit (สุขุมวิท) is a district of the city of Bangkok.
To know
Sukhumvit is an exclusive district of Bangkok where there are many high-end condominiums, villas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Very popular with both Thai and foreign visitors and immigrants. Going south-east it becomes more and more residential. Here is also Khlong Toei which by contrast is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Bangkok.
Sukhumvit Road is not only one of the longest roads in Thailand, but in the world. Towards the west it changes its name to Phloen Chit Road is Rama I Road when entering the area of Siam Square but to the east it unravels to the borders with the Cambodia. The "soi" are numbered from west to east with the odd numbers in the north and the even numbers in the south and are not aligned: for example the Soi 33 is in front of Soi 24. Also these soi also have their own names, for example Soi 55 is better known as Soi Thong Lo, and they may have their own soi, such as Thong Lo Soi 1.

Looking at the tall apartment blocks, the Skytrain and the perennial traffic jam on Sukhumvit Road, it's hard to believe that this area was made up of rice fields only until World War II. After the war it developed with large modern villas intended for the upper classes. With the value of properties ever increasing, developers have acquired more and more land and built large buildings and apartments. The construction of the BTS skytrian in 1999 which covers much of Sukhumvit Road has further increased the popularity of this district.
The lower-numbered soi (between Soi 1 and Soi 63 roughly) are residential areas popular with Western immigrants and wealthy Thais. Full of shopping malls, restaurants and hotels. The red light venues of Nana Entertainment Plaza (on Soi 4) e Soi Cowboy (between Soi 21 and 23) are always found in this area, as well as many other more or less recommendable bars. Plus the sidewalk has become a huge market selling everything from suitcases to fake Rolexes and after midnight the stalls turn into bars and pubs. Sukhumvit offers the best restaurants in Bangkok, from five-star to street restaurants; the variety and choice are mind boggling. Japanese restaurants can be found in the area of Soi 21 onwards although most tend to be on Soi 55. Indian restaurants are around Soi 12 while Arab restaurants are clustered in Soi 3/1 also known as Soi Araba. After Soi 63, Thai restaurants regain possession of the territory.
South of Sukhumvit soi is located Khlong Toei, known to foreigners for the Thai Port FC football team and for the Khlong Toei market. Khlong Toei is a district, a market and a port named after the canal that flows through the area; in fact it means "channel of the Pandan" which is a plant that grew along the south bank of the channel. Much of the canal was later filled in to build Rama IV Road in 1947. South of the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway are the slums of Khlong Toei, typically not explored by even the most adventurous traveler. On the banks of the river is the Khlong Toei port whose history dates back to the 9th century when it connected Bangkok with the cities to the north. Since 1981 it has lost much of its economic significance after the larger and closer Laem Chabang port Pattaya took the market.

The BTS line Sukhumvit Line, serves, as the name suggests, Sukhumvit Road from west to east. Sukhumvit can be reached directly by skytrain from Siam Square or Phahonyothin. The ride from Mo Chit takes about 25 minutes to reach Asok Station and from Siam Station it takes about 10 minutes. If you come from Silom take the Silom Line north and change at Siam to the Sukhumvit Line. A ride from Saphan Taksin takes approximately 20 minutes to reach Asok Station, including a change in Siam. Trains run every 5-10 minutes and cost around 15-40 baht.
The most important BTS stations, from west to east, are: Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo, Ekkamai, Phra Khanong, On Nut, Udom Suk, Bang Na and Bearing. Each station serves the neighborhood of the same name. Asok is the most convenient station because it is in the center of Sukhumvit and has a direct transfer by MRT metro.
Meter
If you come from Silom or Ratchadaphisek, Sukhumvit can be reached directly by MRT. The most convenient station is Sukhumvit which is right in the center of the district and there you can change to the BTS line. The other stations in the district are Khlong Toei and QSNCC. The metro ride from Silom takes about 10 minutes and from Ratchadaphisek takes about 15 minutes. Trains run every 5-10 minutes and cost around 15-40 baht.
Airport Rail Link
L'Airport Rail Link provides a direct link between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phaya Thai Station for a ride that takes approximately 26 minutes. In Phaya Thai you have to change to the BTS line of the skytrain. The systems are not integrated so you have to buy a new ticket. Take a train towards Bearing and get off at the station you want: Nana and Asok are the most popular.
The fast ferry service Saen Saep Express Boat it's a tough but fun way to get to and from Sukhumvit. The Saen Saeb canal forms the northern boundary of the district's soi and is a cheap way to skip traffic jams if coming from Khao San Road, the area east of Rattanakosin or Ramkhamhaeng.
There are two lines: The "Golden Mount" travels from Panfa Leelard near Monte Dorato, east of Rattanakosin, a Pratunam near the Ratchaprasong intersection. The NIDA line travels from Pratunam to the north east of the city, along Ramkhamhaeng Road, arriving at Wat Sriboonreung. A single ride from Panfa Leelard to Nana Nua takes about 35 minutes and costs 13 baht. However, one must change in Pratunam. Other stops along Sukhumvit's north soi, from west to east, are: Nana Chard, Asoke-Petchaburi, Prasanmit, Italthai, Wat Mai Chonglom, Baan Don Mosque, Soi Thonglor, Charn Issara is Vijit School.
If you are coming from the Grand Palace in Rattanakosin, there are two ways to get to this area. The fastest way is to take the Chao Phraya Express Boat for the Sathorn pier a Silom. From there continue north using the Silom Line of the BTS skytrain. You will need to change trains at Siam BTS station to continue east on the Sukhumvit Line. The whole journey from Rattanakosin takes about 40 minutes. Alternatively you can walk for 30 minutes, or 5 minutes by taxi, to the pier of Panfa Leelard and continue the journey using the Saen Saep Express Boat ferry.
By bus
The first tip to remember about traveling by bus is: don't travel by bus. Sukhumvit Road is probably the busiest street in Bangkok and the bottlenecks are there all day until late in the evening. It is also difficult to understand which bus travels to the desired place and at which stop to get off. It is better to take the skytrain, the metro or the fast ferry even if they cost a little more.
If you insist on traveling by bus there are many routes that travel in the Sukhumvit area. The most important is the bus 25 which starts on the southeastern part of Sukhumvit Road. From there travel north-west along Sukhumvit Road and then go up Ratchadamri Road and Rama IV Road towards Silom. From there continue to Hualampong Train Station crossing Charoen Krung Road or Yaowarat Road (depending on the direction) and finally finish at Tha Chang in Rattanakosin, for the Grand Royal Palace.
To get from Suvarnabhumi Airport you can take the bus AE3 for Sukhumvit for a cost of 150 baht. It passes by the elevated Bang Na-Trat Expressway to Siam Square. Go back around Nana to get back to the airport. Another option is the bus 552 which goes to On Nut where it continues to the skytrain. There are many stops and depending on the traffic the ride can take between 1 and 2 hours.

Free. Mon-Sun 05: 00-20: 00. When the Thai Tobacco Monopoly moved factories to Chiang Rai in 2008, the lake and some surrounding lands that were part of the district were turned into a public park. Many beautiful trees were cut down to make room for the gardens where new saplings were replanted. Located adjacent to the convention center is a clean park with cycling and running paths, exercise machines and many monuments.

Ban Kamthineg is an old 19th century teak house in the middle of Bangkok's skyscrapers. It was transported from Chiang Mai piece by piece and reassembled in Bangkok in 1964 to be used as the headquarters of the Siam Society, an organization with the aim of preserving Thailand's cultural heritage, with a closer eye to the north of the country. In addition to the house itself, there are traditional tools on display once used by farmers and fishermen from the north. There is also a selection of Thai plants in the garden. The museum is a bit small so it won't take long to visit.
- 4 Thai Pharmacy Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ เภสัชกรรม ไทย), 40 Sukhumvit Soi 38 (Thong Lo BTS station), ☎ 66 2 391 6243. Free. Mon-Fri 10: 00-16: 00. The museum is on the third floor of the Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage Building. It was opened to advertise traditional medicine from past to present so that subsequent generations could learn and treasure it. The exhibition has many subjects, such as the birth of the pharmacy, the evolution of the oriental pharmacy and basic witchcraft. The evolution of Western-style Thai pharmacy and the evolution of herbs and natural products. If you are visiting in a group it is advisable to contact them in advance.

Exhibition center on the variety of scientific knowledge. Attractions include a planetarium, an aquarium and a permanent exhibit on sports science, communications technology and natural environments. Shopping
As Sukhumvit is one of the main streets of Bangkok it is full of modern shops, boutiques and malls ranging from Soi 3 (Soi Nana Nuea) to Soi 63 (Soi Ekkamai). Most of the shops and restaurants are concentrated between Soi 3 and Soi 21 (Asok Rd) and in the shortcuts between Asok and Ekkamai.
Markets
Sukhumvit's sidewalk has been smothered for years with zillions of stalls which all offered more or less the same things you can find at the Patpong Night market, such as souvenirs, accessories, fake clothes, porn and pirated DVDs and other junk at better prices than Patpong. In 2016, old laws prohibiting street sales were enforced and today only a few retailers are left out of stores. This has made walking around this area a lot easier even with a stroller even though Thailand is famous for law enforcement periods that don't last long, so it's possible that the stalls will soon cover the sidewalk again. It is generally expected to have to to bargain but you will only save a few baht.
- 1 Khlong Toei Market, Rama IV Road (Queen Sirikit National Convention Center MRT Station). Mon-Sun 00: 00-24: 00. Huge and surprisingly central market off the beaten track. The stalls sell Thai products at Thai prices. Basically it is a food market with meat, fish and garden products with a few second hand clothes stalls. Always open but it is more interesting to go there in the evening.
Shopping centers
Terminal 21
There are many shopping malls on Sukhumvit Road and the best are Emporium and the new Terminal 21 but you could also jump on the skytrian for Siam Square. TO Thong Lo everything is "super cool" from clothes to accessories to interior design and we could call it the "Siam Square of Sukhumvit" with its trendy fashion boutiques, trendy shops and a very elegant overall look.
- 2 Emporium, 622 Sukhumvit Road (Exit 2 of the Phrom Phong BTS station), ☎ 66 2 269 1000. Mon-Sun 10: 00-22: 00. Classy mall that sells a bit of everything that can be luxury, from watches to cosmetics to clothes, and competes directly with Ratchaprasong's Gaysorn Plaza. The lower floors are dedicated to brands like Louis Vuitton and Rolex, and the higher floors are better priced. The Kinokunyia bookstore has a large selection of English language books, including travel guides. The top floor has one of the best cinemas in the city after Siam Paragon (and cheaper than the latter) and the Thailand Creative and Design Center. On the fifth floor there is a good selection of restaurants and a small and hidden catering area, which changes the concept of this type of areas where instead you can have something simple even if the place is aimed at a high class audience , and is therefore cheap and always full. Park Food Hall serves large three-course meals with wine in a dimly-lit atmosphere.

Opened in 2015, it is the newest high-end shopping mall in Bangkok and uses unusual architectural solutions to differentiate itself. There is a 40-meter waterfall, an indoor tropical garden, the SkyCliff, a 45th floor viewpoint and a suspended garden enclosed within a spiral walkway connecting 9 floors of restaurants with a Japanese at the top of the terrace on the roof. Apart from that the mall has the usual things: restaurants, shops with hundreds of foreign and Thai brands as well as an IMAX cinema.
- 4 Ekamai gateway, 982/22 Sukhumvit Road Prakanong Klongtoey (Exit 4 of Ekamai BTS station), ☎ 66 2 108 2888. Mon-Sun 10: 00-22: 00. Mall located on the southern part of Sukhumvit before it becomes Samut Prakam. It proclaims itself a Japanese-style shopping center with special shops such as a coffee shop " maid cafe", a concept imported from Japan, and a" Snowy Village "theme park where you can play in the snow or take ski lessons.
- 5 J Avenue, 323, 323 / 1-3 Soi Sukhumvit 55 (Thong Lo BTS Station), ☎ 66 2 660 9000. Mon-Sun 07: 00-00: 00. Opened in 2004, it is a typical four-story upscale shopping mall in the posh Thong Lo district. Outdoor facility with rain trees inside. Modern architecture and trendy shops aimed at the Japanese clientele of the area (the J stands for Japanese).

The so called "lifestyle malls" are the new thing in Bangkok and the last one is the K-Village, opened in 2009, it should be a small village where you can meet and meet new people. It is actually yet another mall with supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and lots of fashion shops.
- 7 Nana Square, 49 Sukhumvit Road (Nana BTS Station), ☎ 66 2 253 0192. Mon-Sun 10: 30-22: 30. Generic mall in a convenient location. It has everything you would expect from a Bangkok shopping mall, including a food court and a dry cleaner.
- 8 Ploenchit Center, 2 Sukhumvit Road (Phloen Chit BTS Station), ☎ 66 2 656 8600. Mon-Sun 08: 00-22: 00. Although the name may be misleading, this mall is not on Phloen Chit Road but on the western side of Sukhumvit Road. The ground floor has the usual chain stores as well as fairly inexpensive clothes shops, jewelers and supermarkets. Most of the tourists do not arrive here and the clientele is therefore made up of employees of the neighboring buildings. The sixth floor has one of the cheapest dining areas in the area with a good selection of Thai dishes and uses a coupon system to pay.
- 9 Robinson, 259 Sukhumvit Road (Asok BTS Station or Sukhumvit MRT Station), ☎ 66 2 651 1533. Mon-Sun 10: 00-22: 00. Robinson is a well-known department store that has locations throughout Bangkok. Its downstairs dining area, despite being decent, is a bit more expensive than the others and you probably need to help yourself a couple of times to be satisfied.
- 10 Terminal 21, 288 Sukhumvit Soi 19 (Asok BTS Station), ☎ 66 2 108 0888, fax: 662 108 0800. Mon-Sun 10: 00-22: 00. The curved glass and steel facade looks like a 21st century airport. The basement is Caribbean-themed and is where the market for gourmet products, takeaway restaurants, street restaurant stalls, banks and book stores are located. The ground floor is called Rome and has clothing stores from brands such as Kipling, Fox, CC: OO, Nike, Jaspal, Adidas and Levi's. The mezzanine floor is called Paris and leads into a copy of the Champs-Elysees. From the 1st to the 3rd floor there are smaller shops of independent local brands; the women's department is on the 1st floor (Tokyo) and the men's department on the 2nd floor (London). The third floor (Istanbul) is dedicated to gifts, jewelery, fashion accessories, toys, beauty products and home decorations. San Francisco is on the 4th and 5th floors with more than 50 restaurants and cafes. If you want the food court go to the 5th floor at Pier 21. This is most likely the best food area in Bangkok for good prices, variety and quality: dim sum, grilled fish, Hainanese style chicken rice. , pad thai, duck noodles and vegetarian options. Desserts include mango rice, grattachecche and geato. On the 6th floor is the SF Cinema City cinema with eight screens, two of which are 3D.
Shops
If you know where to go Sukhumvit offers some of the best tailoring in Bangkok. Never go to those that offer tailor-made clothes ready in 24 hours. If you want good quality you have to go to a reputable tailor who asks for two to five measurement sessions and the whole process will take about a week.

How to have fun

Go-go bars and breweries

Soi Cowboy (just off Asok Road) e Nana Entertainment Plaza (Soi 4) are full of go-go bars like a Patpong. Soi 33 it is full of bars with higher class hostesses than the other two just mentioned. Given the high offer, you can go from bar to bar and then find the one you prefer. They all work with the same concept and these on the list probably won't turn you off.

A single stage with choreographed shows every evening from 10pm to midnight, it is not very full and is not ideal for a single on the hunt but a good introduction for couples and onlookers.

- 3 Beer Garden Soi 7, 15 Sukhumvit Soi 7 (BTS Nana station, walk inside the soi for about 100 meters and stay on the left), ☎ 66 2 255 7838. Mon-Sun 09: 00-02: 00 daily. Not a go-go bar but a place where girls hang out for the night for all ages. Very busy and do not require the fee for the bar. Other than that it might just be a place to hang out with some western music if you don't want company. They serve German beers as well as Franziskaner. You can eat European food at the tables or just drink at the counter.
- 4 Long Gun (Lucky Star), Soi Cowboy (Asok BTS Station [Geodata leads to Soi Cowboy]). Beers 120 baht. Mon-Sun 19: 00-02: 00. It's not the biggest bar and has seen better days and looks like it's the oldest bar in Soi Cowboy and the oldest go-go bar outside Patpong. It has a less hectic atmosphere than other larger bars and is worth a visit if only for "historical" reasons.

At first glance it seems dull and small and the only thing that gives a Chinese touch are the traditional clothes of the waitresses but it is famous (together with the Sheba's just opposite) to put on the best shows in Bangkok.
Bars and pubs
If you are looking for a place to watch your favorite sport on the big screen, there are plenty of offers from Sukhumvit 2 to 33. The stereotypes are English rugby pubs serving beer and snacks.

Con un crescente interesse del vino sia locale che internazionale, vengono aperte sempre più vinerie a Bangkok, molte delle quali sono adesso di moda con disponibilità di vini francesi, italiani, spagnoli e internazionali.

Ristorante italiano un po' difficile da trovare per chi non ci è mai andato ma una volta lì si viene premiati con una vasta selezione di vini, dagli economici ai più esclusivi. Molti vini italiani e francesi con una buona selezione anche da altri paesi. Su due piani con dozzine di tavoli e un grande bar al pian terreno. Il piano superiore è più rilassato con molti divanetti e sale private, una delle quali addirittura con un ingresso separato per non dare dell'occhio. La clientela è un misto di thailandesi e occidentali.
Locali alla moda

Soi 11 e 23 hanno i locali più di moda in città. Questi posti sono dedicati alle persone che voglio vedere ed essere viste, molto frequentati da thailandesi che vivono bene e immigrati occidentali. La Soi 55 (Thong Lo) e la Soi 63 (Ekkamai) hanno la loro offerta di posti nei quali passare la notte, più modesti e con caratteristiche in comune coi bar più tradizionali.
Da notare che nei locali qui sotto listati viene applicato un codice di abbilgiamento, quindi niente infradito, pantaloncini corti o canottiere. Portare sempre il passaporto perché devono controllarlo all'ingresso.

Discoteca di alto livello aperta di recente nella quale organizzano feste dopo gli orari di chiusura ed è una buona alternativa a Narz. I primi due piani sono praticamente una pista con un balcone sovrastante dove suonano elettronica mentre al terzo piano suonano un mix di hip-hop e musica pop.

Il posto migliore di Bangkok per la musica alternativa. Chi frequenta questo posto se la tira meno e sono più divertenti degli altri posti alla moda. Frequentato da visitatori internazionali in cerca di una discoteca in stile europeo. Il Giovedì si chiama "No Problem Disco" mentre i fine settimana le loro feste hanno temi differenti a rotazione.

A cena i clienti mangiano seduti ad un tavolo lungo ed unico e si vocifera che sia il tavolo da cucina più lungo del mondo. Il cibo è "fusion", un misto tra thailandese e internazionale.

Indirizzato soprattutto ai ricchi thailandesi ricorda un po' i locali di Ibiza. Sul palco accadono molte cose e ci sono molti spettacoli con un buon gioco di luci. Uno dei posti più importanti dove ballare in città e discoteca preferita del DJ Paul Oakenfold. Conosciuto anche per rimanere aperto più a lungo rispetto agli altri posti che chiudono alle 02:00.
Dove mangiare
C'è un'enorme selezione di posti dove mangiare attorno a Sukhumvit e le Soi circostanti anche se i prezzi tendono ad essere alti rispetto agli standard thailandesi. Ogni tipo di cucina mondiale ha qui la sua rappresentanza quindi questo è il posto dove rompere la dieta a base di Pad Thai e provare i migliori giapponesi, libanesi che potrete mai mangiare.
Moderate prices
Anche se qui non sono un'istituzione come a Siam Square, le aree ristorazione presenti in ogni centro commerciale sono una buona opzione se si vuole sopravvivere a Sukhumvit con pochi soldi e si vuole dell'aria condizionata. Come a Siam Square questi posti hanno una grande varietà andando dai semplici spuntini ai pasti più raffinati. I centri commerciali Emporium, Ploenchit Center e Robisnon hanno delle aree ristorazione decenti e la gran parte usa un sistema a coupon per pagare dove gli inutilizzati vengono rimborsati. Se si sa dove andare ci sono delle soi dove ci sono dei ristoranti di strada molto economici.
- 1 Mercato notturno Soi 38, Sukhumvit Soi 38 (Uscita 4 della stazione BTS Thong Lo), ☎ 66 2 712 1680. 30-60 baht. Mon-Sun 19: 00-03: 00. La Soi 38 offre alcuni dei ristoranti di strada migliori di Bangkok, basta sedersi ad uno dei tavoli di ogni banchetto e loro poi presenteranno il conto finale. Si può trovare il miglior riso al mango (ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง khao niow ma muang) della città. Da provare sono anche gli spaghetti noodles col pesce alle erbe.
- 2 Talat Na Sukhumvit Soi 1 (ตลาดนัทสุขุมวิท ซอย1), Sukhumvit Road (Stazione BTS Phloen Chit, [i geodata portano a metà strada tra le due Soi]). Tra la Soi 1 e la Soi 3 c'è una serie di ristoranti di strada e il migliore è il più lontano dalla strada principale, si chiama Oowan Im (letteralmente 'ciccione è pieno') ma l'indicazione in inglese ha scritto su soltanto "Seafood" oltre al thailandese. Il pesce è la loro specialità e in ordine di bontà c'è il "pesce croccante in salsa piccante", la zuppa di Tom Yum e tutte le loro insalate thailandesi, come l'insalata di pesce misto. Le verdure fritte in stile cinese sono deliziose.
I ristoranti economici sono in genere difficili da trovare ma i seguenti sono tra i preferiti tra la popolazione degli immigranti occidentali.

Took Lae Dae è un'istituzione a Bangkok. Immaginate un bancone lungo solo di cuochi e cibo invece di camerieri e bevande frequentato da personaggi coloriti granzie al Nana Plaza di fronte. Il nome significa letteralmente "buono ed economico" e certamente il riso fritto costa 40 baht ma i piatti occidentali, molti dei quali per meno di 100 baht, hanno reso famoso questo posto. La colazione americana (due uova, prosciutto, bacon o salsiccia, succo di frutta, toast e caffé) è un buon affare per soli 47 baht, servito tra le 06:00 e le 09:00, o 58 baht servito ad ogni altra ora del giorno.
Prezzi medi
- 5 Nam Bliss, 189/1 Sukhumvit (Appena a sud della stazione BTS Nana, tra la Soi 8 e 10 [i geodati non sono accurati ma portano tra le due Soi]). 100-250baht. Lun-Sab 08:30-21:00. Caffetteria thailandese senza pretese con una grande offerta di prodotti locali. Parlano poco inglese ma ci sono le foto ad aiutare e non adattano i sapori al gusto occidentale.

Servono buone grigliate anche se un po' costose. Il menu a pranzo per 250 baht è un'opzione migliore. Happy hour tra le 16:00 e le 19:00 e si consiglia di prenotare.
Cucina Fusion
Il cibo thailandese con influenze moderne ultimamente è molto di moda. I ristoranti fusion sono attorno al complesso H1 nella Soi 55 di Sukhumvit (Soi Thong Lo).

Una delizioisa esperienza di cucina variegata con piatti da tutto il mondo: zuppe, insalate, panini, portate intere oltre ad una selezione di piatti fusion francesi e thailandesi. La caffetteria offre anche piatti a portar via o consegna a domicilio. È inoltre una guest house con tre stanze con un giardino tropicale e piscina privata.

Ristorante estremamente moderno in cemento e acciaio che offre un menu fusion che va dal vero thailandese alla pasta fino agli hamburger. Le portate principali costano attorno i 300 baht anche se i menu sono più economici.

Un nuovo ristorante situato all'interno dell'edificio Kingston Suites Bangkok e i suoi piatti potrebbero essere descritti come "fusion" in quanto offre cibo internazionale e alcuni piatti mediterranei. Si raccomanda di assaggiare gli involtini di asparagi e i Martini.

Cucina Thailandese
- 11 Cabbages and Condoms, Sukhumvit Soi 12, Khlong Toei (Stazione BTS Asok), ☎ 66 2 229 4610. 300 baht. Lun-Dom 11:00-22:00. Gestito dall'Associazione per lo Sviluppo della Comunità e Popolazione Thailandese, il nome strano (che significa Cavoli e Profilattici) si riferisce al fatto che la NGO promuove prodotti agriculturali oltre all'uso dei profilattici e si può immaginare cosa servano al posto dell'ammazza caffè. Il cibo è buono e adattato ai palati occidentali. Un po' caro ma è per un'ottima causa.
- 12 Check Inn 99, Sukhumvit Soi 5 (Stazione BTS Nana, nascosto tra la Soi 5 e 7. Va cercata l'insegna bianca con le lettere nere che indicano l'ingresso a un sottopassaggio), ☎ 66 81 735 7617. 300-450 baht. Lun-Dom 17:00-02:00. Nelle recensioni precedenti descrivevano questo posto come uscito da un film di James Bond ma sembra in realtà più vicino al Rick's Café di Casablanca. È un oasi in mezzo al caos dell'area di Nana. Hanno un buon menu di cibo thailandese ed occidentale, con del personale gentile e premuroso e ogni sera hanno del fantastico intrattenimento grazie a dei musicisti filippini. La musica comincia alle 20:45 con toni leggeri e rilassati che si scaldano man mano che la notte avanza. La happy hour è tra le 18:00 e le 20:00. La bisteccheria serve cibo europeo e thailandese e le bistecche sono buone. La nuova gestione organizza feste a tema quasi tutti i sabati quindi se si trovano i camerieri vestiti in modo strano non c'è da meravigliarsi.

C'è un bar con delle sale private al piano superiore. I menu pronti sono a buon prezzo e il cibo è eccellente e comprende dei piatti difficili da trovare altrove, alcuni dei quali potrebbero essere più piccanti degli standard thailandesi.

Ristorante molto buono in una casa thailandese antica con un esterno molto alberato. Grande menu con foto e il personale molto gentile veste costumi tradizionali thailandesi.
Cucina asiatica
Cercare di raccapezzarsi tra l'enorme offerta di Sukhumvit potrebbe all'inizio essere scoraggiante ma si potrebbe cominciare visitando i quartieri con cibo etnico. "Little Japan" è vicino a Sukhumvit Soi 33 e dall'altra parte della strada sulla Soi 24 tagliata in due dalla stazione BTS Phrom Phong c'è anche una minore concentrazione di ristoranti giapponesi sulla Soi 55 (Soi Thong Lo) e in particolare il Nihonmura ("Villaggio Giapponese") Su Thong Lo Soi 13.

Le due cose da provare assolutamente qui sono il Sukiyaki in stile giapponese e lo Shabu shabu. I camerieri vi allestiranno una padella bollente al cenro del tavolo nella quale ognuno si metterà gli ingredienti a piacimento. Cibo delizioso servito fino a sazietà ed è meglio prenotare se si vuole andare dopo le 18:00 perché è sempre pieno.

Il servizio potrebbe essere un po' rude e c'è da fare attenzione al conto che potrebbe arrivare gonfiato.

Si può ordinare il menu "Iso", un piatto pieno di sashimi, per 1.600 baht. Sembra costoso ma costa più o meno come le altre catene di ristoranti giapponesi ma qui il pesce è più fresco e di migliiore qualità.

Ci sono una dozzina di ristoranti al piano terrento del complesso e sono autentici, che vuol dire che potrebbero esserci dei problemi nell'ordinare se non si conosce il cibo coreano. I prezzi sono un po' alti ma acluni hanno anche prezzi decenti

Cucina Indiana e mediorientale
Ad una breve camminata dalla stazione BTS Nana, ci sono due soi, la Soi 3 e la 3/1 conosciunte anche come Soi Arabe per la grande concentrazione di aziende mediorientali. In alcuni punti vedrete più insegne in arabo che in thailandese, quindi grazie alla forte domanda e alla competizione qui potrete mangiare il cibo migliore di questa parte del "Libano".

C'è anche un menu speciale a prezzo fisso a pranzo e a cena. Oltre al buon cibo l'arredamento è bello e i prezzi sono alti.

Arredamento molto semplice ma il cibo è spettacolare.

Un buffet con formula "all-you-can-eat" è disponibile a pranzo il Sabato e la Domenica tra le 12:00 e le 15:00. Ogni sera dalle 18:00 invece lo stesso tipo di offerta è disponibile per il barbeque internazionale. Fuori da queste offerte il menu è caro e non vale la pena. L'albergo è un punto d'incontro famoso per scandinavi con un'atmosfera familiare, costa circa 1.800 baht per una stanza pulita e silenziosa con piscina disponibile.

Conosciuto per la sua insalata pomelo (ยำส้มโอ yam som-o) e l'anatra al curry rosso (แกงแดงเป็ด kaeng daeng pet).

L'arredamento è fantastico, specialmente Lan Na Thai arredato con manufatti e circondato da case in teak può competere tranquillamente con la casa di jim Thompson. Il complesso ha anche un cocktail bar di lusso, un centro massaggi ed organizzano lezioni di cucina. Per un amassaggio "reale" occorrono 900 baht/h. Le lezioni di cucina costano 3.000 baht per due ore e si deve prenotare almeno con una settimana di anticipo.

I cuochi sono italiani quindi i piatti sono ottimi con un'altrettanto ottima selezione di vini. Decisamente molto caro.

I prezzi sono alti anche se i menu pronti sono più economici, circa 525 baht per tre portate più caffè.

Dove alloggiare
Il valore delle proprietà a Sukhumvit è tra i più alti a Bangkok e di conseguenza le stanze per dormire devono adattarsi ai costi. Ci sono molti alberghi da 4 o 5 stelle indirizzati a persone con tanti soldi e le guest house sono difficili da trovare e costeranno il doppio che in altre zone.
Un altro mercato che tiene i costi alti qui è quello del sesso. Ci sono alcuni alberghi ad ore vicino a Nana Entertainment Plaza e Soi Cowboy. Anche se economici, sono squallidi e possono essere prenotati per un paio d'ore.
Altri alberghi invece appendono dei cartelli che vietano l'ingresso ai turisti del sesso e molti non permettono l'ingresso a nessuna signorina thailandese, anche se è solo un'amica, mentre altri lo permettono se portano una carta d'identità.

Altri servizi presenti sono gli armadietti di sicurezza e una stanza magazzino, aria condizionata, TV con grandi schermi, cucina molto semplice, docce calde e un'area esterna dove si può mangiare. Le stanze sono semplici ma hanno il lettore DVD, aria condizionata, letto matrimoniale e un frigo bar. Nell'atrio c'è un bar ben fornito e il ristorante offre cene a base di grigliate con dei buoni cuochi. Molti stranieri ubriachi entrano ed escono in continuazione dalle loro compagne thailandesi durante l'intera giornata. Il bar accanto ha musica dal vivo fino alle 04:00 che rende il dormire piuttosto difficile.

Per aiutare con la distanza c'è un servizio tuk-tuk disponibile tutto il giorno da Sukhumvit Road.

Quest'albergo è a metà strada sulla Soi 4 ma a 10-15 minuti dalla strada principale con un servizio navetta se si è troppo pigri. Le stanze sono sorprendentemente spaziose e silenziose ma un po' decadenti con aria condizionata e televisione satellitare. La piscina è piccola ma va bene per una nuotata veloce. Il ristorante ha grandi schermi un tavolo da biliardo e serve del buon cibo locale. È vicino alla squallida Nana Entertainment Plaza, quindi ci sono molti uomini occidentali con ragazze thailandesi in giro.

A Sukhumvit ci sono molti alloggi di buona qualità per questa fascia di prezzo. È possibile prenotare anche per più notti ottenendo uno sconto sul prezzo in gran parte dei posti.

Non c'è la cassaforte in stanza e la piscina sul tetto è particolarmente bella.

It is not to be confused with the larger and more expensive Majestic Grande in nearby Soi 2 although they are the same owners and guests of the Majestic Suites can get a pass to the Grande's pool and spa.

The bathroom has a very old bathtub with terrible plumbing, a refrigerator, in-room safe and television. There is a disco and a bar. Good option for the lower end of this price range if you are not bothered by the nearby sex spots and staying in a hotel that also has the option by the hour. The buffet breakfast is very good. Wi-Fi costs 300 baht for 24 hours and 60 baht for one hour.

The Krung Thep wing is newer, better and more expensive than the old Siam wing. The service is not great and every time you leave the hotel you are attacked by taxi drivers and prostitutes. There are better choices on Sukhumvit Road but assuming you are not in this part of Bangkok for a quiet rest then the location is perfect, right in the middle of the action with many Sukhumvit attractions just a short walk away.

If you are a football fan there is a Mancheter United bar / restaurant within the hotel. If you are not interested there are many options at walking distances.

Five-star hotel in a very high-rise building conveniently located near the Asok BTS station with a pedestrian bridge connecting directly to the hotel. There are all the facilities one would expect from a five star including some superb restaurants such as the famous Rossini Italian restaurant.

Sukhumvit is full of internet cafes, pubs and bars offering free Wi-Fi and computer access for prices as low as 0.5 baht per minute. If you try to print something it will open you up to new experiences. Pay attention to key loggers (devices or software capable of saving every single keystroke in an encrypted file) which could steal the passwords that seem very common here. There have also been cases where memory cards have been infected with viruses.
