background

Kolberg is one of the oldest settlements on the Baltic Sea, which, thanks to the salt trade, had already developed into an important trading center in the early Middle Ages. The fact that, when the ecclesiastical province of Poland was reorganized in the year 1000, Kolberg was elevated to a bishopric of the Archdiocese of Gniezno along with Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan, testifies to the importance of the place. The Kolberg diocese includes all of Pomerania. The bishopric was lost again and was later moved to Kamień Pomorski at the Szczecin Lagoon relocated, but Kolberg remained an important trading center on the Pomeranian coast. The place received city rights in 1255 and joined the Hanseatic League. The spa business dates back to 1830. Kolberg was declared a fortress in 1945 by the German herres management, which meant that the place was destroyed to 95% in March 1945 in fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. In the same year, reconstruction began with the construction of the lighthouse to commemorate the fallen soldiers. The reconstruction of the old town continued until the 1990s. In 1967 the place received the status of a sea spa.

Sea spa

Kolberg is one of the largest health resorts on the whole of the Baltic Sea. In addition to the health resort hospital, there are 24 sanatoriums in which a wide range of treatments is offered. security

The Baltic coast usually falls flat under water and there are hardly any tides or unpredictable currents. Bathing is therefore generally safe for families with children and swimming accidents are rare. When swimming accidents do occur, excessive alcohol or drug consumption is usually involved. However, if you follow the general bathing rules and do not go into the water when the waves are high, you have little to fear.

health

If you are legally insured in Germany or Austria, you can get medical treatment in Poland without any problems and the costs will then be reimbursed / covered by your own health insurance. Basically you need the European health card EHIC for this. If you travel to Poland for (dental) treatment, the assumption of costs should be clarified with the German / Austrian health insurance company in advance. The same applies to a spa stay in Kolberg, the costs of which are covered by some German health insurance companies under the same conditions as in Germany. You should contact your own health insurance company in advance to clarify the details.

The supply of pharmacies is quite good and many medicines are cheaper in Poland than in Germany. Prescription drugs can only be obtained upon presentation of a doctor's prescription. It is best to clarify in advance whether the desired drugs require a prescription in Poland and to get a prescription from a Polish doctor in advance.

Doctors and pharmacists in Poland usually speak English very well, and some also speak German. You can find out which doctors or pharmacists speak German at the local chamber of doctors or pharmacists.

There is a regional spa hospital and numerous spa facilities in the village.

climate

In the region there is a transitional climate between maritime and continental climates. The amount of precipitation is lower and the temperature fluctuations higher (warmer summers, colder winters) than on comparable coasts in Western Europe.

Practical advice
