Kundasang - a small place in Sabah on the island Borneo is right on the southern edge of the Kinabalu National Park. It offers an interesting memorial as well as accommodation and can therefore be a starting point for tours to Mount Kinabalu, hikes in the national park or to the hot springs near Poring. From here there is a beautiful view of the mountainous surroundings around the national park.

The place is mainly inhabited by the Dusun. a local minority as well as a proportion of Chinese. The place is known for its vegetable growing. Major customers come from all over East Malaysia and Brunei to buy their vegetables here. Everywhere along the paths you can see wooden stalls (Malay: gerai)at which the products are offered for sale. Kundasang market is open every day of the week.

The journey takes place on the road, the place is on the A4 which Sabah's capital Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan connects. Both places are also the closest to be reached by plane or ship.

  • buses start at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu and cost RM 15.00 to 19.00. You drive to the not far away Ranau.
  • The journey with your own car from Kota Kinabalu (approx. 2 hours) has a special charm, as it runs through a landscape that is well worth seeing and there is always the opportunity to stop. If you take a taxi, you have to shell out around RM 200-300.

Tourist Attractions

  • Kundasang War Memorial (on the mountain just behind the vegetable market). In 1962, Major G. S. Carter, a New Zealander, established this memorial. It serves to commemorate both the 2,248 Allied prisoners of war (Australians and British) who died in 1945 during a Death March from Sandakan after Ranau died as well as the Sabahans who risked their lives to help these people. The memorial looks like a fort and was designed by local architect J.C. Robinson designed. It consists of a series of five interconnected gardens, starting with an Australian, then among others an English and finally a Bornean garden. There is also a water basin and a room where documents on the subject are kept. There are also seats here and the opportunity to watch a 20-minute video. To commemorate the end of the war after 60 years, the site was restored in 2005.Price: Admission: RM 10.00.

  • Interesting excursion destination is certainly the Kinabalu National Park. In addition to the two-day ascent of Malaysia's highest mountain, the national park offers a botanical garden, some hiking routes of various lengths, and a canopy walk. The park entrance is west of the village a bit on the main road towards Kota Kinabalu. For climbing enthusiasts there is the Mountain Torq Via Ferrata. There are via ferratas of different lengths and tours of up to 4 days.
  • To the east it goes to the a little bigger place Ranau. To the north are the hot springs of Poring. Here you can enjoy swimming. A little above there is a beautiful canopy walk on suspension bridges up to 40m high, which are attached to trees with ropes. In the treetops you have a nice impression of the local rainforest as well as an occasional view of the surroundings. There are also a couple of waterfalls not far from the springs. There is also a butterfly farm and an orchid center.
  • There are a number of rare ones around the village of Poring Rafflesia The huge flowers take almost a year to bloom. After that, they only bloom for a week. They emit a smell that is more reminiscent of putrefaction. But the size of the flowers is impressive. If you want to see a blossom, you can ask on site (hotel, shop or tour guide) whether and where one is currently in bloom. As a rule, everyone on site is informed about this.   • The Mesilau Nature Park is a few kilometers north of the city. The name is derived from a yellow waterfall (silou means yellow in the language of the Dudun).
