Poring is a small town in the state of Sabah - the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo. It lies on the eastern edge of the Kinabalu National Park and is known for its hot springs. But not only these are worth a visit. There is also a Canopy Walk (Suspension bridges between the treetops). As well as a butterfly farm, waterfalls and an orchid center.

The place is 40 kilometers east of the Kinabalu National Park Administration in the Ranau district and is surrounded by lowland rainforest. The name of the place comes from the language of the indigenous Kadazandusun and describes a native bamboo species. The place is known for its sulfur springs. Bathing in their water is not only relaxing, but also therapeutic.

getting there

The journey takes place on the road, the place is north of the A4 which Sabah's capital Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan connects. Both places are also the closest to be reached by plane or ship.

  • The Canopy Walk is the highlight of a hike around the place. It consists of suspension bridges that are stretched between the trees. You walk through the treetops over a distance of over 100 meters. The way to get there starts at the end of the hot springs. Afterwards you can hike to the waterfalls. The walk on the Canopy Walk costs RM 5.00 (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). A photo fee of RM 5.00 is due for cameras. The path to the suspension bridges is a somewhat arduous one-kilometer circular route. It is not well developed and very slippery in the wet season. If you have difficulty walking or are afraid of heights, you should skip the tour.
