Lake Lugano takes its name from the Swiss city of Lugano. In Italian, Lake Lugano will be Ceresio, from Latin Ceresium.
The water level is 271 m a.s.l. It has an area of 48.7 km², of which 30.7 km², approximately 2/3, belong to the Switzerland and 18 km², about 1/3 belong to theItaly. At its deepest point, Lake Lugano is 288m deep.

Monte San Giorgio
The whole strip close to the southern shore of Lake Lugano is rich in fossils.
1 Monte San Giorgio. On the southern shore of the lake it was in the Triassic, 240 million years ago, in a tropical lagoon. Fossils of fish, reptiles and ammonites, as well as insects and plants have been found in the rock for 150 years. It has been a world heritage site since 2003 UNESCO and was expanded in 2010.
