To know
How to orient yourself
The historic center of Liège extends on the west bank of the Meuse River"Meuse" in French).
As a reference point we can take the secondary railway station "Liège-Palais" where many city buses terminate including those coming from the main station. It is so called because it is near the ancient episcopal palace, the Palais des Princes-Évêques de Liège which overlooks the piazza San Lamberto, where the ancient cathedral once stood, demolished at the time of the riots in Liège that accompanied the French revolution.
- Hors-Château district - To the east of the Episcopal Palace is the Place du Marché with the town hall and in the center the fountain surmounted by the column "le Perron", symbol of Liège. Walking the way Hors Château, flanked by old houses, you arrive at the famous Montagne De Bueren stairway which with its 400 steps leads to the citadel of Liège.
- Old Town - To the south of the market square extend the districts of le Carrè, Ise and La Batte which form the historic center of Liège. The first is a popular neighborhood, so called because of its checkerboard layout. Very picturesque, Le Carrè has a large number of pubs and nightclubs frequented mainly by students. The main attractions of the historic center of Liège are the church of Santa Caterina, the Royal Opera House and the collegiate church of St Jean, which became a cathedral after the destruction of the older one of San Lamberto destroyed in 1794 by the revolutionaries of Liège who followed the example of their French neighbors.
- Outremeuse neighborhood - Crossing the arch bridge or the southernmost pedestrian bridge called "Passerelle Saucy", you enter the Outremeuse district where the Dubuisson Aquarium is located and secondary museums, such as the Tchantchès museum dedicated to puppets.
- Guillemins neighborhood - Located about 3 km south of Place Saint-Lambert, the Guillemins district is around the station of the same name where fast trains stop between Brussels is Colony. The station building is the work of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
