Background
It is the ancient Laumellum dei Romi, which was an important commercial center on the communication routes towards Piedmont and towards the Alpine passes from Piacenza is Pavia. Built where previous pre-Roman settlements of Ligurian populations already existed, Laumellum remained an important center even after the fall of the Roman Empire. With the Lombards Lomello consolidated its commercial role, being also not far from the capital of their kingdom, Pavia; in Lomello, tradition places the marriage between the Lombard queen Theodolinda and the Duke of Turin Agilulfo.
In the Frankish era the town became the seat of the County, and its Counts were Counts Palatini and Counts of Pavia: in this period the name was born Lomellina. After the period of the Communes, Lomello entered the Milanese orbit. Francesco Sforza gave it as a fief in 1450 to the Marquises Crivelli, who kept it until the end of feudalism, when it was abolished in 1797. In the meantime, the whole Lomellina had passed, in 1707, to the Piedmontese Savoia, whose destinies it will follow until Unit.

- 1 Castle (now Town Hall), Piazza Castello. Of ancient origin, perhaps from the tenth century; the subsequent manipulations of the original quadrangular structure have changed its appearance, while retaining many traces of the original layout. 11th and 15th century renovations have left an ancient part in the L-shaped building; the eastern part of the building dates back to a later period. From the portico on the western side you enter the staircase that leads to two rooms on the first floor frescoed by valuable sixteenth-century works that denote artistic influences of the Venetian school.
- The exterior is characterized by an ornamental design obtained with the bricks arranged in sawtooth running at the top of the escarpment. Now the building is used as the municipal seat.

- 2 Baptistery of San Giovanni ad Fontes. Of Lombard workmanship, built in the eighth century on a pre-existing building probably of the fifth century, it is the oldest monument in Lomello. It has an octagonal plan and an octagonal drum, inserted in a Latin cross; built in bricks, on the outside you can see the salvaged bricks dating back to the 4th century, while the upper part sees the use of more recent materials from the early Christian era. Roman tombs are preserved around the Baptistery. There are two entrance doors: the main one to the west, while the secondary one to the north facilitates access to the Basilica.
- In the center is the baptismal font for immersion baptisms, with an irregular hexagonal shape like those of the area of Aquileia; the material used for the Fonte is all recycled. The internal parts of the pool they are decorated with red lozenges and geometric motifs in the style of Byzantine basilicas. The Baptistery also preserves parts of the so-called flooring ad opus sectile, that is, with hexagons and rhombuses connected in an irregular way.

Basilica opening hours: From April 1st to October 31st: Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 6pm (all other days by appointment only). Call the custodian of the Basilica Frà Jorge 339-2051058. Canonica: Via Castrovecchio, 2. Holy Masses Hours: Weekdays: 8.30 am; Summer holidays: 6 pm Winter: 5 pm; Holidays: Summer 8.30 - 11 - Winter 11.00 - 17.00;. It is the seat of the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Michele Arcangelo. Its foundation can be dated approximately to 1025; its structure is a Latin cross, with three naves and three apses, and develops for a length of 60 meters. The church we see today is the result of the works that have taken place over time; it has certainly replaced a previous building also of considerable size that was paired with the Baptistery whose primitive shape and foundation dates back to the fifth century. The ancient facade of the previous Basilica, as well as the bell tower, was leaning against the Roman walls of the ancient city of Laumellum.
- The evocative ruins of the first three ancient bays remain, perhaps due to the earthquake of 1177 or to the destruction of Lomello by Barbarossa, who set fire to the fortress in 1155. Architectural interventions of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries distorted the internal aspect; in the years 1939 - 1953 a restoration work brought the basilica back to its origins.
- The curiosity
- The first Sunday of each month at 5 pm Mass is celebrated in Latin.
- 4 Church of San Michele Arcangelo, via Cavour. Its foundation dates back to the 12th century; in Romanesque style, it has a Latin cross plan and an octagonal lantern. The interior with three naves has baroque and seventeenth-century side chapels, but also retains traces of ancient origin, such as a Roman brick with a Latin cross and date CCCCXXXXI (441) inserted in a nave, or a terracotta tile engraved with the date 1121 ( perhaps of the foundation of the church) and the inscription S. Michael; on the walls of the choir there are also traces of medieval frescoes. According to tradition, the church holds a relic of the wood of the Cross.
- Church of San Rocco (not open to worship). It was built in 1524 for a vote expressed by the people to the Virgin and San Rocco to be protected from the plague. The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament commonly called there was located there of San Rocco. It was rebuilt after the plague Manzoni from 1630, with a single nave, and was equipped with the current bell tower.
