How to get around

Map of the center of Malaga

By bike

Malaga has invested heavily in bicycle transport so that today the inhabitants very often use the bike to go to work and for leisure on weekends. In Malaga there is also a cycling association supported by the public transport authority. The use of bicycles is promoted to help the quality of the environment, because it is fun and healthy. Advertising campaigns and activities and excursions outside the city are organized.

Several cycle paths have been built and thanks to them the center has been very well connected to the northern part of the city. The historic center is already free from motor vehicles which makes it very safe for those who want to travel by bike, and there are other areas such as the port that are only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

In addition to the city, the coast is also worth exploring by bike. The east direction is probably the most popular route because it is possible to pass through the villages of Pedregalejo is El Palo until Rincon De La Victoria without leaving the main road. Going west is not as simple: to go to Torremolinos, for example, it can be difficult to find a road other than the busiest roads.

There are steep climbs north of Malaga. Montes de Malaga it is the most famous street from the center and you get to a height of 900m in less than 15Km, this route is known by the locals as "The Reina" and is not for amateur cyclists. Another notable climb is known as "The Wall", 9Km in between Moclinejo is Almáchar on an inland route from Malaga to the coastal resort of Torre Del Mar.

An alternative route for cyclists is the "Sierra de Mijas". It initially heads west from Malaga on a busy road partly to the airport, then becomes a steep country road to the white villages of Benalmadena Pueblo is Mijas Pueblo, then descends towards Alhaurin el Grande and back on the north side of the Sierra de Mijas to Malaga via Alhaurin de la Torre.

Events and parties

What to do

Malaga during the holiday season
  • Sport climbing. In the Malaga area there are many places where you can practice mountaineering. The El Chorro Gorge is a 50-minute drive northwest and is where the 'Walk of the Kings' - a path suspended above the gorge is located.
  • Beach life. The closest beach to the center is La Malagueta - nice, but there are better and quieter beaches to the east. It can be reached on foot, but it is a rather long (but very pleasant) walk along the seafront, otherwise take a bus from near the bullring towards El Palo (e.g. line 33).
