To know
Geographical notes
Marano gives its name to the western area of the Adriatic lagoon of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which in its eastern part is called Grado lagoon. It is 34 km from Lignano Sabbiadoro, 35 from Degree, 25 from Palmanova, 28 from Aquileia, 20 from Latisana.
Background
Already inhabited in Roman times, it was the seat of a synod in 590, which sanctioned the tricapitolino schism by the patriarch of Aquileia and its ecclesiastical province.Subject to Aquileia since the first half of the eleventh century, the locality was disputed by the Holy Roman Empire and by Venice in the first decades of the sixteenth century and definitively passed under the dominion of the Serenissima in 1543.

What see
- Loggia. In Marano Lagunare we still find many buildings from the era of the Serenissima, and the most important is the Loggia Maranese, a closed loggia with ashlar in Istrian stone, where the community met. Once above it stood the Palazzo Comunale, seat of the main decisions, which collapsed in the eighteenth century due to poor maintenance.
- 1 Millennial Tower. Next to the Loggia rises the so-called Millenary Tower, 32 meters high, of which we have the first news in 1066. It is likely that in the beginning it was a watchtower. All its sides are decorated with busts from various town administrators. The Tower was severely damaged by the 1976 earthquake; and the top has been rebuilt.
- Palace of the Provveditori. It is located on the same square as the Tower; former home of the governors of the fortress, today it houses an exhibition of objects.
- Bastion of Sant'Antonio. In ancient times the whole town was surrounded by a system of walls, demolished in the nineteenth century; the bastion is the only surviving part, together with a few other traces.
- 2 Church of San Martino, via Synod. Dating back to the eighteenth century and housed reliquaries with presumed remains of San Vito, the city patron, stolen during the First World War.
- 3 Church of the Madonna della Salute. Not far from the center, it preserves the statue that is carried in procession by boat on August 15 every three years.
- 4 Martignano island (Island of the Shells). It is an island in the Marano Lagoon. It is located very close to the peninsula of Lignano Sabbiadoro, and for this reason it is visited by many tourists in the summer. A large sedimentary sandbank, better known as the "island of shells", it is very rich in flora and fauna; it represents an ideal place for hikers who love uncontaminated nature, who frequent it assiduously throughout the summer. Its coastline towards the open sea is made up of golden sand.
- In addition to bathing in crystal clear waters, sunbathing, walking inside in search of some rare poultry species, or collecting splendid shells that the sea brings back to the beach, the island is a regular destination for "Kiters" since it has ideal breezes for lovers of this sport, who have made it their usual home.
Events and parties
- Feast of San Vito. in June. On the occasion of the feast of the patron saint of Marano lagoon a suggestive boat procession is held.
- Feast of the Blessed Virgin of Health. on 15 August every three years. The statue of the Blessed Virgin of Health is carried in procession to the pier to be placed on a boat that heads for the church of the cemetery; from here, late in the evening, the sacred image always returns to the parish church by boat.
