Map of Morocco

Morocco, Kingdom of Morocco (Arab.المملكة المغربيةAl-Mamlaka al-Maghribijja, toddler.ⵜⴰⴳⵍⴷⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵍⵎⵖⵔⵉⴱTagldit N Lmaġrib) - country located in northwestAfrica above The Atlantic Ocean and The Mediterranean Sea.

Characteristic

The most popular tourist regions of Morocco are the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to numerous smaller coastal bathing areas, there are several larger cities in Morocco with great tourist attractions: Discount, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech and Agadir. The three former royal capitals are also worth visiting: Fez, Marrakesh i Meknes. In the south of the country it is worth visiting Tiznit, where Berber jewelery and dromedary rides are offered at the local market. IN Kulimina there are camel markets. Two mountain villages are hardly used Azru and Ifran in the Middle Atlas, as well as Michlifene - winter sports center. Thanks to the convenient ferry connections, tourists from France and Spain constitute the majority of visitors to this country. Tourism is increasingly important in the economy of Morocco, which is one of the leading African countries (after Egypt and Tunisia) in terms of the volume of tourist traffic. This is mainly due to a fairly well-developed tourist base and low seasonality, as well as the increasing Europeanization of the country.

On UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List Morocco has eight positions.

Geography

Morocco borders on Algeria (on the east), Western Sahara (in the south) and Spanish exclaves in Africa: Ceuta and Melilla (on the north).

Climate

Morocco is situated in two climatic zones. There is a subtropical climate on the coast, turning inland into a very dry, mountainous climate, and even desert in the southeast. Summer in the whole country is rainless and almost cloudless. January is the coldest month here.

Travel time selection

Visas

From January 1, 2005, Polish citizens going to Morocco for a period of up to 90 days for tourist purposes are exempt from the visa requirement. This exemption does not apply to arrivals for permanent residence in order to work or other gainful occupation.

Customs regulations

At airports, there are no restrictions on the number and size of beverage bottles that can be brought on board in hand luggage (as of March 2013).

Currency exchange

The official currency is the dirham, which is not convertible outside Morocco. Dirhams can be bought for dollars or euros in virtually every hotel and airport. The sale of dirhams theoretically (as of March 2013) requires the presentation of a certificate of earlier purchase issued by the exchange office, but in practice, with smaller amounts, this provision is not complied with. It is best to use the ATM network. They work around the clock, are available everywhere, and the cost of the transaction (one-off) is about 10 euros. The maximum collection amount for "Visa Debet" cards is MAD 3,900 (one-off).

By train

By bus

By ship

Lots of ferry connections. A good place to leave Europe is Algecirasfrom where ferries to the Spanish enclave run with an hourly frequency Ceuta and Tangier (approximately € 36 in January 2007). Tickets can be purchased until the last minute before departure and their price does not depend on the company or the standard of the ferry.

Choosing is definitely a better idea Tangier due to convenient connections with the whole country. In addition, while sailing on this route, some border formalities (filling in the entry declaration, stamps in the passport) will be arranged during the cruise. You should take care of this - otherwise we will be turned back from the gangplank.

In Tangier, return tickets can be purchased at one of the many (as in Morocco) offices in front of and in the terminal. They cost (January 2007) about 400 MAD.

Border crossings

The border with Algeria is closed along its entire length.

Transport

By train

Poorly developed railway network, to the south, trains only reach Marrakesh.

By bus

There are two main types of buses in Morocco - CTM and all the rest.

The buses of the state-owned company CTM usually depart from separate stations, where we can count on coffee, a timetable, a quiet waiting room and other luxuries. The buses themselves are new, clean and air-conditioned. Seats are numbered. The station employees are responsible for loading our belongings - we leave the bags at the luggage office (5 to 10 MAD per item), and we collect them on the spot from the driver upon presentation of the relevant receipt.

Traveling by a private carrier bus is a cheaper and more interesting option. The adventure begins with setting the departure time and purchasing a ticket. In the hall of the station in a large city, there are several or several dozen cash desks belonging to various transport companies, and packs of beaters circulate between them. To get a fairly complete picture of the situation, it is worth seeking information from several sources. Of course, you can also buy the ticket directly on the bus (but you have to find it first - the inscriptions are usually only in Arabic!). The driver also charges "after consideration" the fee for the luggage in the hold. It seems that a fair rate for a Polish tourist is 10 MAD. The vehicle itself may look impressive from the outside, inside we can expect a greater or lesser degree of deterioration. If we have a chance to choose a place, it is worth paying attention to whether the backrests of our and those in front of us have no problems with keeping upright. We should also not expect working air conditioning or heating. During a long night journey, it is worth taking sleeping bags and some extra clothes into the cabin - it will probably not be warmer on the bus than outside ...

Regardless of what bus we are going to take, when planning a trip, it is safe to assume that it will take about 50% longer than we were told. If we can be disgusting when choosing a seat - it is worth sitting on the side not exposed to sunlight.

By car

In Morocco it is very easy to rent a car (prices from 23 euros a day (as of 2013), but beware. As a security, the company blocks about 700 euros on the payment card. This amount is blocked for a period of about one month and you cannot use it during your stay!

Taxis

  • Grand Taxi - large taxis (read: Mercedes 210 from the 1970s) 5-seater car taking up to 6 people by the driver, the cost of the trip is divided among all passengers, so they compete with buses, easily accessible, fast - even too fast on winding mountain roads.
  • Petit Taxi - city small taxis, traveling within the city, always set the price before slamming the door. They take up to three people.
  • Sample fees

From Marrakech airport to city center from 100 to 150 MAD (family of three). The official price list is visible at the Taxi stop, but the price still has to be negotiated.

Tongue

  • official: Arabic
  • in common use French
  • many people in the country speak Berber dialects on a daily basis
  • in shops, hotels, bus stations, you can usually communicate in English without any problems (although, for example, in taxis it is different)

Security

Morocco is a tourist-friendly country. Despite the fact that crime in Morocco remains quite high, tourists are very rarely victims of it. Nevertheless, on rarely frequented streets, also near tourist facilities, attacks by armed attackers may occur at night. Therefore, you should refrain from night walks in these areas. Tourists, especially after sunset, should move in groups of several people, never alone - also in the city center. Scooter thieves often rip women's handbags. In crowded places you should be very careful and carry your purse or backpack with documents in front of you, never in the back, keep money and passport separate and do not keep all your money in one place. It is also worth having a photocopy of your passport. It is better not to stroll through the medinas at night - old city districts that are crowded with tourists during the day. Pickpocketing has occurred in the bazaars in Morocco (souks). Poor neighborhoods in all major cities in Morocco are also dangerous. It is strongly recommended not to enter poor neighborhoods.
