Geographical notes
Fraction of Oristano from which it is about 5 km, it is located in the historical region of Campidano of Oristano.
Background
The first human settlements date back to the prehistoric period, scholars locate in the area called 'montigu mannu' an Eneolithic (pre-Nuragic) settlement and a Nuragic settlement that would have hosted a single tower nuraghe which was then demolished. Massama has Roman origins and takes its name from a statio that stood along the Via Maxima, the ancient road that connected Tharros to Forum Traiani (Fordongianus).
In the Middle Ages, the Giudicale Villa of Massama became part of the Giudicato d’Arborea and was included in the curatoria of the Campidano Maggiore.
In 1410 it became part of the marquisate of Oristano and remained there until 1477 when the great fiefdom was seized from Leonardo Alagon and administered by royal officials. In 1652 there was a plague epidemic.
In 1767 its civil revenues became part of the marquisate of Arcais, a fief of the Nurra.
In 1821 it was included in the province of Oristano and finally in 1836 it was freed from feudal dependence. In 1848 the provinces were abolished and it became part of the administrative division of Cagliari and in 1859 of the renewed province of the same name.
In the night between 8 and 9 February 1917, a flood of the Tirso river, after days of rain, caused the collapse of 34 houses and the flooding of almost all the remaining ones.
Massama was integrated into the municipality of Oristano as a hamlet in 1927.
