The market town Matrei am Brenner is after Rattenberg the smallest municipality in Austria in terms of area and is located on the important one Brenner route between Stubai and Tux Alps.

background

A first settlement can be documented by finds from the Führbronzezeit, the name Matrei probably also has one Illyrian Origin.

Under the Romans, Matrei (locus Matreia, later Matreium) is a stop on the important route over the Alps and is located at the fork in the road in the directions of Innsbruck, Augsburg and Scharnitz. The origins of today's townscape with the inns and handicraft businesses close to each other and along the main street can be traced back to this time and the early Middle Ages. Matrei has been a market since around 1200.

During the Second World War, Matrei suffered severe bomb damage as a target on the important supply route for German troops and was then rebuilt in the old style. Today the place consists of the "market" and the "old town".

In addition to the trade (electrical appliance factory), tourism is also of economic importance with over 30,000 overnight stays per year.
