The Tux Alps lie southeast of innsbruck in the Tyrolean lowlands in Austria. A term that has become obsolete in common parlance is also as Tux Prealps. The mountain group is known for its Ski areas In addition, the mountains are also a popular hiking and ski touring region.

Valleys
Peripheral valleys
The Tux Alps are bordered on three sides by large alpine valleys:
- The Lower Inn Valley in the north the Tux Alps is densely populated and heavily industrialized, it borders the Tux Alps Karwendel from. The greater Innsbruck area in the Lower Inn Valley and in the northwest of the Tux Alps is the cultural and economic center of the State of Tyrol.
- The Zillertal in the east is the border valley to the subsequent Kitzbühel Alps, it is a broad and densely populated trough valley and highly developed for tourism.
- The busy one North Tyrolean Wipptal in the west of the Tux Alps with the Brenner motorway and with the Brennerbahn is the border valley to the Stubai Alps.
At the South side of the Tux Alps, two smaller alpine valleys mark the border to the Zillertal Alps:
- Tuxertal, a south-western side valley of the Zillertal;
- Schmirntal, an eastern side valley of the Wipptal;

The mountains themselves are sparsely populated; the opposite applies to the adjoining valleys.

in the southeast subsequent Tuxertal:
- Finkenberg (839 m)
- Hintertux, (1511 m) hamlet and tourist center at the valley station of the glacier ski area.
in the west subsequent Wipptal:
- Slap (986m), at the foot of the Patscherkofel;
- Matrei am Brenner (992m), tourism and business;
- Obernberg am Brenner (1380m) in the Obernberger Tal;
- Steinach am Brenner (1048m), market town;

The Tux Alps are through that Lower Inn Valley from the north adjoining Karwendel and Rofan (in the northeast), through the eastern one Zillertal of the Kitzbühel Alps, by the Tuxertal and Schmirntal of the Zillertal Alps in the south and by that Wipptal from the west adjoining Stubai Alps severed.
The Dimensions of the mountains from north to south are approx. 35 km, from east to west it is approx. 25 km.
The mountains are now listed as a separate mountain group according to the Alpine Club classification, at the beginning of the last century they were still variously listed as a subgroup of Zillertal Alps guided.
Geologically the mountains consist of slate, only in the area of the Wattener Lizum there are limestone overburden.

In the boundaries of the Zillertal Alps, there are nationally important traffic routes on two sides:
- The Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley with the Inntal Autobahn A12 and the Unterinntalbahn in the very north of the region;
- The Brenner route with the Brenner motorway and the Brennerbahn through the Wipptal immediately to the west of the region;
By plane
Airports in the vicinity of the Zillertal Alps are the Innsbruck Airport immediately in the northwest of the mountains. The Salzburg Airport can also be reached via the Inntal motorway, the Munich Airport is a little further away.
By train
Of north the easiest way to get here is with the Lower Inn Valley Railway.
With a change on Jenbach train station The east of the region can then be reached via the Zillertal Railway.
Of south the journey takes place with the train line of the Brennerbahn from direction Verona above Bolzano. Until after innsbruck the Brennerbahn then travels the entire mountain range in the west.

- The easiest way to get here from the north and west is via the Inntal motorway A12;
- From the south, the journey is via the Brenner;

Ski areas are the Patscherkofel and on Glungezer, in Hochfügen, Kaltenbach and Penken;

List of mountain huts of the German Alpine Club (DAV) and des Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) as well as private huts for hikers and mountaineers. Most of the huts are only open in summer (from May / June to October). Before the ascent, it is best to call the hut staff again to make sure it is really open. A reservation is useful and welcomed. But please, too cancel againif you don't come after all.
Many huts also have a winter room that is accessible outside of the opening hours. As a rule, the key to the hut is to be picked up from the responsible supervisory section.
