background

Panorama Hintertux

The place Tux is first mentioned in a document in 1280. The hamlet of Hintertux belonged to the parish for a long time Matrei am Brenner in the Wipptal. Politically, Hintertux has belonged to the municipality of Tux since 1926, with the municipal administration in Lanersbach.

The beginning of mass tourism in winter is the year 1949 with the founding of the Zillertaler Gletscherbahn, initially as "Schiliftgesellschaft Hintertux" and a newly built chairlift, which was destroyed by an avalanche in 1951. But with the construction of further lifts in 1954 and 1960 and the first lift to the glacier in 1968, ski tourism cannot be stopped in Hintertux even in summer.

Today Hintertux consists of two parts of the settlement, that is the actual place Hintertux, a small hamlet with the church and farmhouses and from the valley station of the glacier railway located about one kilometer to the south-west directly at the end of the valley as a hotel village with the operating buildings for the lifts and large parking lots.

In the street

The Tuxertal itself is a dead end, the approach is only from the north Lower Inn Valley (Inntal motorway A12, Kufstein - innsbruck) and continue on the federal road B169 through the whole of the Zillertal or from the east Mittersill on the federal highway B168 and over the Gerlos Pass (subject to toll, approx. ten euros), each over Mayrhofen possible.

For the journey in the winter months, winter equipment including chains is strongly recommended. While the approach through the Zillertal is still relatively flat, there are some steeper climbs along the route in the Tuxertal. In addition, there is often the narrowing of the lane due to the snow when there is heavy traffic, including oncoming traffic from the ski buses. In spring and autumn, it is also easy to get ice in the morning from the condensation from the previous day.

In spring, during the high season of the glacier ski area, the parking spaces at the valley station of the glacier lift can be overcrowded on weekends and when the weather is nice. The drivers are then diverted to alternative parking spaces in the Tuxertal beforehand, and the further journey to the valley station of the glacier cable car is then made with the ski bus.

There are a total of 5 ski areas in Hintertux, they all began when the Zillertaler Gletscherbahn was founded in 1949 as the "Skiliftgesellschaft Hintertux" and the first lift was built. More lifts followed, from 1965 the Sommerbergalm (Middle station) reached with a new single chair lift. In 1968 the first lift up to the present day was built Tuxer Fernerhaus (2,660 m), followed by the development of the overlying glacier region with lifts.

The Hintertux glacier ski area is the heart of the Tux slopes and one of now eight glacier ski areas in Austria and also Austria's only year-round ski area. The slopes in the Tux glacier ski area are mainly north-facing and also east and west-facing, only the slope on the Großer Riepenkees is south-facing. The result is a location protected from solar radiation, the sulz snow typical of the summer ski areas under high summer sunshine occurs a little later in the daily routine than in comparable glacier ski regions. However, the consequence is also that in the winter months the north-facing locations disappear into the sun shade very early in the afternoon, with unfavorable light conditions on the slopes. Technically, the slopes on the glacier are mostly in the medium difficulty range, some are also a little steeper.

Because of the risk of crevices, the markings must be observed in midsummer.
