Geographical notes
Southern Minas Gerais is bounded by the following regions: to the north by Central western Minas, north-east from Metropolitan Mesoregion of Belo Horizonte, east of the Area da Mata, to the south-east by the State of Rio de Janeiro and to the south and west by the State of Sao Paulo.

It is made up of 2 mesoregions:
- Campo das Vertentes
- Sul and Sudoeste de Minas
Urban centers
- Alfenas - A few kilometers away is the Furnas artificial lake, one of the largest in the Brazil. Numerous water sports can be practiced there.
- Caxambu - Named spa with 12 springs.
- Itajubá - At the foot of the Serra da Mantiqueira and with various points of interest for ecotourism.
- Lavras - Internationally known for its universities, with natural attractions such as the Quedas do Rio Bonito ecological park and religious such as the church of Our Lady of the Rosary.
- Nepomuk - Between 850 and 1,100 m of altitude.
- Passos - City with an intense cultural life.
- Pouso Alegre - Economic and industrial center, great for shopping.
- Poços de Caldas - Rich in green areas and with trekking paths in the surroundings.
- Santa Rita do Sapucaí - Located in the mountains between the states of Rio de Janeiro is St. Paul.
- São Lourenço - Various important events take place here throughout the year, which over time have favored tourism.
- São Thomé das Letras - Some believe that it is one of the seven energy points of the Earth.
- Varginha - It stands out as one of the major centers of coffee trade and production in Brazil and the world.
