Moulins is a city in the Auvergne, it was the capital of the historical French province "Bourbonnais" and is now the capital of the Allier department.

background

A settlement on the banks of the Alliers was first mentioned in a document in 990. Already in 1103 there was talk of a church in this place.

Archambaud VI, Baron of Bourbon, granted the citizens 1232 civil liberties. When the House of Bourbon was raised to duchy in 1327, the first Duke Louis I de Bourbon moved into his residence in Moulins. From Louis II de Bourbon, the city became the definitive seat of the duchy and gained importance as the seat of the dukes of Bourbon, until in 1523 Charles III, the Connétable de Bourbon, rebelled against the French king François I and his dignities and possessions lost (as a military leader he later led to Milan and as part of the Sacco di Roma to the Holy See).

In 1562 the Huguenots tried to gain control of the city. After a massacre, numerous monasteries and monasteries were built in Moulins as part of the Counter Reformation. After numerous wooden bridges repeatedly fell victim to the high Allier and there were only ferry connections across the river, the engineer Louis de Régemortes built the stone arch bridge that still exists today, which was completed in 1762. After the French Revolution, an "École centrale" was founded in Moulins, from which in 1804 the Lycée Théodore de Banville emerged as one of the oldest high schools in France.

Postage stamp collectors may be familiar with the place Moulin, as the post, which was washed into the city in soldered metal balls (Boules de Moulins) on the Seine during the Prussian siege of Paris, was sorted into Moulins and therefore the leading note "Paris, about Moulins Allier) "wore.
