background

The parish church of St. Anna was built from 1895 to 1903 in the neo-Gothic style.

Neuschönau was first mentioned under the name "Schönau" in 1395, and by the end of the 14th century several glassworks quickly settled there, including the oldest glassworks in the Grafenau district, built in 1417. This was taken over in June 1600 by Thomas Kaiser, after whom the two localities Altkaiserhütte and Neukaiserhütte were named. Over time, the town of Schönau became Altschönau and Neukaiserhütte Neuschönau. Due to the favorable location on Gulden Stras since the 15th century, the population grew very quickly, so that in 1889 there were already 1000 inhabitants with 200 school-age children. Neuschönau remained an important glassmaking place and the St. Anna parish church was completed in 1903 as the new church. Two fires raging in Neuschönau in 1926, in 1929 the church was badly damaged in a storm. After a referendum, the municipality name was officially changed on June 1, 1981 from Schönanger municipality to Neuschönau municipality.
