Nidau is a Swiss City in the canton Bern.
background
Nidau is also the capital of the Nidau district of the same name in the canton of Bern.
It is located on the shores of Lake Biel, southwest of Biel and has grown together with the city. Most of the municipality is now on an artificial island, which is from the Zihl and the Aare which is here in the Nidau-Büren Canal.
The city emerged from Nidau Castle, which is first mentioned in a document dated August 30, 1196. This was by Count Ulrich III. issued by Neuchâtel, who is also believed to have commissioned the construction of the defiant moated castle. The actual city was built by Rudolf III. He was one of the most powerful representatives of the Nidau count's house. He was considered an ardent supporter of Austria, but initially he was on friendly terms with Bern. Due to the influence of the aristocrats, however, he was viewed by Bern as an enemy over time, and the city founder suffered his death in 1339 in front of Laupen. From this time only the corner defense tower and some remnants of the curtain wall have been preserved as the only evidence of the city at that time. Nevertheless, you can still clearly see its trapezoidal floor plan today. In 1375 the powerful count dynasty of Nidau went out with the death of Rudolf IV. As a result, the city came to Bern in 1388. After a turbulent period, this meant the dawn of a quieter era for Nidau, as the old legal provisions from the time of the count and most important for urban life were repeatedly confirmed by the Bernese. The castle was subsequently the seat of the bailiffs until 1831, during which time a total of 86 Bernese bailiffs and four senior magistrates ruled here.
Only recently did Nidau lose its important location on the traffic routes to Biel. Before the construction of the rail network, which forms an important node in Biel station, Nidau was the transshipment point for goods traffic across Biel and Lake Neuchâtel.
