New York - the largest city in United States and one of the largest in the world - 13th in terms of population. It borders with the state of New Jersey.

Characteristic

Tourically, it is worth visiting for many reasons. Still considered the "world capital", and it cannot be denied that this city is one of the main sources of American culture.

The city consists of five districts, the most attractive being of course the famous Manhattan. Besides, New York is also Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and the island Staten Island. Brooklyn [aka. Kings County] and Queens are part of the island Long Islandwhile the Bronx is the only neighborhood on the mainland.

The Manhattan district is divided into three parts: Lower Manhattan, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan. Lower Manhattan, in other words Downtown, is an extremely attractive district due to its color and architecture. The ends of the island are crowned with a series of tall buildings, which are mainly housed in office buildings. Later, the architecture "goes down". The range of tallest buildings close together is Midtown Manhattan, and it is this part of New York that is like a showcase of this city.

When to visit?

The city has a subtropical climate with lots of sunny days. The summer is exceptionally warm, with an average July temperature of 28 ° C, but the walls of the buildings warm up and raise the temperature by two or three degrees. Winters, with the average temperature around zero, do not appear to be cold, but the cold, due to high air humidity, is a nuisance. In addition, heavy snowfall every few weeks, paralyzing the life of the city.

The best time to visit New York is spring - starting in May. In May, flower beds in the streets and discounts in Central Park are planted with tulips and other spring flowers, adding charm to the walks. During July and August, on clear days, there is a nagging heat, and the temperature sometimes exceeds 40 °, which, combined with high air humidity, is even more noticeable and makes visiting difficult. The convenient visiting period ends at the end of August. During this time and in September, there is a period of storms and hurricanes. Its peak falls in mid-September. October, which is calmer in terms of the weather, definitely cooler, is also a good time to visit the city, and autumn walks in Central Park, not overcrowded with people, have their charm.

Transport

MetroCard

Municipal transport company The New York City Transit Authority sells 'MetroCard' cards for use on the buses and trains it serves, although it is possible to pay for the bus in the form of calculated coins, however, metro gates (Subway) accepts only MetroCard cards so far. MetroCard cards can be bought online, at metro stations, as well as kiosks and some grocery stores (metro card sales outlets display placards with the MetroCard logo). Information on MetroCard prices, types and limitations is available. on the official website [1].

In the near future, the option of paying for the metro ride with a bank or credit card accepted in the system is planned.

By subway

New York subway

The subway is one of the most popular ways to travel around New York due to the time and cost involved. Despite not always the purest appearance and smell, the New York metro - one of the few in the world operating 24 hours a day, allows you to travel on the same line or change to another for one and the same price, regardless of distance or districts. Generally speaking, the New York subway is safe, but we warn you against traveling alone at night and waiting for empty stations (designated sections allow for safer waiting and taking a seat next to the subway conductor).

The lines of the New York City subway are marked with letters or numbers. Despite the different colors of the lines, they do not have specific rules.

Subway Maps - A free, interactive map of the New York City subway is available on the website [2]A handy, fold-out map is also available in booths serving each station - you need to ask the operator about it. Maps of the entire metro system are also hung in stations and waiting rooms - but often damaged or scratched by vandals.

By bus

One of the New York City buses

New York City Transit buses is the second most popular public transport in the city and suburbs of New York City. Bus lines are marked with letters and numbers (e.g. M7, Q11, QBx1, QM24 etc.) The letters indicate the district or districts in which the bus operates (M = Manhattan; Bx = Bronx; B = Brooklyn; Q = Queens; S = Staten Island). It is important to know that there is a "Request a Stop" rule between the hours of 22: 00-05: 00. The bus driver can then stop and drop off passengers anywhere (not necessarily at the bus stop), as long as it is safe. The one-time local bus fare is US $ 2.25 (US $ 1.10 for pensioners and disabled people), regardless of the distance we want to cover. The express bus ticket costs US $ 5.50 (US $ 2.75 for pensioners and the disabled). Payments can be made with a MetroCard or with deducted cash.

By ferry

The only free ferry is Staten Island Ferrywhich runs every 15 minutes between Lower Manhattan (Battery Park) and the island of Staten Island. Famous for its orange finish, the Staten Island ferry passes near the Statue of Liberty, which lies between the two islands. It can be used by pedestrians as well as cyclists with bicycles.

Apart from Staten Island Ferry there are also toll ferries that run between Manhattan and several points on the coast of the neighboring state of New Jersey. Finished in yellow - just like the well-known New York taxis, New York Water Taxi is a network of ferries connecting the ports of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and New Jersey.

By cable car

Roosevelt Island Tramway and Queensboro Bridge

Until 2006, New York Roosevelt Island Tramway was the only city railroad in all of North America, connecting Manhattan and the neighboring island on the east side Roosevelt IslandFrom its opening in 1976 to the present day, more than 20 million passengers have traveled Roosevelt Island TramwayRuns 115 times a day (from 6 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.), each of the two carriages carries 125 passengers. The cable car reaches a speed of 26 km / h and covers a distance of 940 meters in 4.5 minutes. At its highest point, it reaches a height of 76 meters above the East River mirror. The line runs parallel to the Queensboro Bridge, from where you can see the carriages passing halfway.

Taxi

New York yellow taxis

The yellow taxi is probably the world famous icon of New York. Each authentic New York City taxi car has an official medallion attached to the front of the hood and inside a thick plastic part separating the driver and passengers, and two light markings on the roof of the cab. If the taxi number is on, the taxi is free to pick up passengers; If off-duty the light is on, or all lights are off, means that the taxi is busy or not picking up passengers, but sometimes even though both lights are off or the lights are on off-duty the taxi driver will stop for the waiting passenger - it means that the taxi driver is finishing the shift, but is going in the direction where the passenger is waiting, which gives him the last chance for his last earnings. Gratuity is generally 10-20% of the fare paid. In addition, the passenger is responsible for additional charges, such as crossing bridges and tunnels. Since 2009, all New York taxis are required to accept payments by credit cards [American Express, MasterCard, VISA, Discover] and bank cards [with the Visa logo or MasterCard], regardless of the fare amount (there is no minimum minimum).

By bike

The bicycle is a fast way to get around Manhattan, even faster than the subway or taxi (couriers delivering express parcels around Manhattan choose bicycles as the most efficient form of communication). However, it is not a method for novice cyclists, because both the alleys and streets are long and rarely have safe bicycle paths marked out. Cyclists are often seen maneuvering between taxis standing on red lights, or riding between pedestrians crossing the street. Despite this, about 100,000 New Yorkers travel to work on two-wheeled. Every year, further road improvements are noted, and cycling-only paths are added in all five districts of the city. One of the most important achievements in the years to come will be completion green path - an asphalt alley completely encircling the island of Manhattan. Maps of existing and planned bicycle roads and paths in the city are available free of charge in bicycle shops.

Worth seeing

statue of Liberty
  • statue of Liberty (Statue of Liberty)[3] - located on the Liberty Island (Liberty Island) at the mouth of the Hudson River, the statue has been a symbol of a free America for over a hundred years. It is one of the largest in the world (almost 93 meters high), it was donated to the United States of America by France on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence. The statue was built by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi in Paris (1874–1884) and then assembled in New York on a port island. The statue was unveiled by the president of Cleveland on October 28, 1886. The construction of the monument allows you to climb up to the crown crowning the head of the statue. Unfortunately, the narrow stairs leading to the torches are closed to the public. Sometimes you have to wait up to an hour to get inside the monument. However, while standing in line, you can admire the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. It was declared a US National Monument in 1924, and in 1984 the monument was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan
  • Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge)[4] - is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA, which when it was opened in 1883 was the largest such structure in the world and the first in which steel ropes were used. Its designer, John August Roebling, crushed his foot in an accident during the works, and three weeks later he died of gangrene. The work was completed by his son, who also nearly died during the underwater work. On the day of its opening, over 150,300 people cross the bridge, while currently 144,000 cars pass through it every day. The bridge is 1,834 meters long and connects Manhattan with Brooklyn, allowing you to cross the East River. The length of the main span above the water is 486 meters, it connects two pylons rising 84 meters above the water. The two side spans connecting the pylons with the shore are 284.5 meters long. The underwater foundations are 13.5 meters deep on the Brooklyn side and 24 meters on the Manhattan side. The bridge is located 41 meters above the water, is about 25 meters wide, and has a total weight of 14,680 tons.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art - the oldest and largest museum in the United States. It is constantly being expanded and the collections are still enlarged. It exists thanks to private donations. A huge collection of works of art: paintings - works of all the most famous artists, sculptures, weapons, musical instruments and utility items. The museum deserves a multi-day visit, because after the first 5-6 hours, the collection of exhibits is limited. On the roof of the museum building, there is an observation deck overlooking the southern part of Central Park and central Manhattan. [5]
  • Central Park (Central Park) [6].
  • Times Square[7].
  • Lincoln Center[8].
  • Rockefeller Plaza[9].
  • "Top of the Rock"[10].
  • United Nations Headquarters (The United Nations).
  • Empire State Building[11] - although it has not been the tallest building in the world for a long time, still, due to its central location and view of the entire lower and middle Manhattan, it is still recommendable. In the peak tourist season, you have to wait in lines sometimes for two hours. Admission, unfortunately paid, while standing in the queue, it is possible to take a souvenir photo (pick-up at the exit). It is especially attractive to be at the top of the building at night and observe the illuminated city and check how often planes land at the JFK airport. During storms and strong winds, sightseeing is impossible. At the entrance to the building there is a restaurant, to its main part we go down the stairs to the basement. In the climatic, crowded interior, the customers are mainly New Yorkers. The menu includes legendary ones Buffalo wings - that is, baked chicken wings in a specific sauce.

Accommodation

Hotels of all known chains operate in the city. Those located in the center of New York, i.e. in Manhattan, are the most expensive. Hotels in other districts, such as Queens or the Bronx, are cheaper, and if they are close to a metro station, they are a good alternative to those in Manhattan

Sparingly

Moderate

  • The Roosevelt Hotel - 45 E 45th St, between Madison Ave and Vanderbilt Ave. Superbly located hotel in Manhattan, close to Grand Central Terminal, one block from Fifth Ave, 15 minutes walk from Times Square and Broadway. The advantage is the beautiful reception hall, the downside - small rooms with tired furniture and internet for $ 15. Room prices from $ 250 for a double room, but in frequent promotions from $ 175, of course without breakfast. We will eat these in places close to the hotel entrance. Breakfast can also be purchased at the hotel.

Exclusively

  • The Plaza [31] - Grand Army Plaza, corner of W 59 St, on Central Park itself, opposite the Apple Store. This is perhaps the most famous New York City hotel. He has been the scenery and natural decoration in countless movies. Unfortunately, the price of accommodation in a double room is discouraging, ranging from 600 to 900 USD. But you can hunt for a promotion, but there is no need to count on a price below $ 400. Apartments, of course, are more expensive. A bonus, when we stay here, is the opportunity to meet the celebrities from the front pages of newspapers who have rented apartments in this hotel on a permanent basis.

It is important to remember dialing the number "1" before dialing the number.
