Omegna is a city of Piedmont.

To know

On the northern tip of the Lake Orta, Omegna is the most populous city. Between the Strona Valley and Mount Mottarone, Omegna is the city of major brands of the household industry (the mocha) but also a city of landscape beauties and atmospheres; is 38 km from Arona, 16 from Stresa, 17 from Verbania, 10 from Orta San Giulio.

Background

The ancient settlement of the territory is proven by the archaeological finds of the hamlet of Cireggio, where in the locality of San Bernardo clay and stone fragments of the late Bronze and Iron Ages were found, and of Mount Zuoli, where a protohistoric altar and a possible ritual slide. With the agreement of 11 August 1221 the nobles of Crusinallo gave Omegna to the Novara people. After the Napoleonic interlude in 1815 the Congress of Vienna sanctioned the restoration of the Savoy family.

From the mid-nineteenth century important factories were established: the Ironworks, the Fabbricone (Angeli-Frua, Society for the printed fabric industry S.p.A). At the dawn of the twentieth century, other pioneers, such as the Cane della Valle Strona, the Lagostina di Pedemonte (Gravellona Toce), transformed the village into a lively industrial center, increasing its population with immigrant labor. In 1913 Omegna was connected with Pallanza from an electric tramway. In 1928 the current hamlets were aggregated to it; in 1939 it was awarded the title of city. During the Second World War the Novara resistance to the Nazi-Fascists began in the area, with the romantic figure of Beltrami; it then continued over the long months, in a succession of mourning (60 fallen including civilians) and successes. Omegna was a base for the partisan liberation of Ossola in September 1944. The liberation of Omegna took place on April 24, 1945, while the Anglo-American troops crossed the Po, and in the cities of northern Italy still occupied by the Nazi-fascist troops, a general insurrection took place This date is now remembered in the name of the square where the town hall is located.
