Background

The name of the village was in the twelfth century "Loretinum", becoming in the fifteenth century "Ratino" or "Rateni", hence for linguistic corruption "Loratino" and finally "Oratino". The feudal succession of Oratino was quite complex over the course of the various epochs, and is not characterized by the constant presence of a single family, as happened in other villages. until the end of the fourteenth century it subsequently belonged to: d'Ardicourt, di Lando, di Sus, d'Aquino, Aragona. In the fifteenth century Oratino was of the d'Evoli, then of the Gambatesa counts (until 1495), of the di Capua. Ferrante di Capua sold it to the Rizzo barons of Naples, from which it passed by inheritance to the Caracciolos. In the remainder of the sixteenth century the patricians Coscia of Naples took over. Before 1586 Oratino became the Spanish of Silva, to be alienated in 1630 to Ottavio Vitaliano (killed June 29, 1639), who became Duke of Oratino in 1638. The feud lived a hard period with the homonymous son Ottavio. Antonio Vitaliano (living in 1699), 4th and last Duke of Oratino, sold it to the Giordano, who were appointed Dukes of Oratino (Diploma of 10 August 1729), a title confirmed by the Kingdom of Italy (1882).

What see

Church of Santa Maria Assunta
  • Giordano Palace. This house was built in the 15th century (second half). Some historians indicate the end of the eighteenth century as the epoch of foundation, on commission of the feudal lords who gave the building its name. To testify the fifteenth-century origin of the manor, and its belonging to the previous feudal lords of Oratino, there is the memory of the moat and the presence of four corner towers, characterized by battlements, demolished by Duke Giuseppe Giordano to modernize the palace according to the eighteenth-century taste . In 1805 an earthquake damaged the house: the north-eastern portion was rebuilt from scratch. Above the main entrance there is the stone vault of the "cross" place: the archivolt is embellished with sculpted acanthus leaves. The internal courtyard is surrounded by a portico.
  • Tower. The tower is located on a rocky spur near Oratino, precisely called "La Rocca", and is what remains of a medieval castle and adjoining village, which collapsed in the earthquake of 1456. square plan, it is about 12 meters high, and has the usual door high above the ground.
  • 1 Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The recently restored parish church of Santa Maria Assunta has stylistic presences between the 13th and 18th centuries. In the vault of the central nave a fresco depicting the Assumption was found and restored, a work signed and dated by the painter Ciriaco Brunetti in 1791.
  • Church of Santa Maria di Loreto. The eighteenth century church has decorations inside (unfortunately damaged by bad restorations) of the brothers Ciriaco and Stanislao Brunetti dated 1757. During the restoration work, carried out on the monument by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage of Campobasso, the remains of a medieval cult building have come to light. The central altar setting and traces of the original terracotta flooring have been found of this typical country church.
Subsequently the church became three naves with an almost square plan (Neapolitan palms 47 and 1/3 long and 49 and 1/3 wide), with a wooden coffered ceiling and central step to access the presbytery. There were three altars, the central one dedicated to the Madonna del Loreto, the left one dedicated to S. Rocco and the right one to S. Sebastiano. In 1716 the current facade was built while in 1718 the vaults on the internal naves were created. Between 1728 and 1757 the church was considerably enlarged in length (practically all the current presbytery). In 1757 Ciriaco and Stanilslao Brunetti, well-known local painters, finished painting the vault of the central nave while the works of the side vaults were completed in 1790.
