Geographical notes

Ostia is located on the central Tyrrhenian coast and is separated from Fiumicino from the mouth of the Tiber. The conformation of the territory is almost completely flat, with small hills consisting of sand dunes, on which in part the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub has grown.

Thanks to its position, Ostia enjoys a mild climate, with winter, autumn and spring being mild and rainy, summer is hot and, at times sultry, mitigated in part by the breeze coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Background

According to historical sources, Ostia was founded in the 7th century BC, during the reign of Anco Marzio, fourth king of Rome. The name of Ostia derives from the Latin host, which in turn is the plural of ostium, or mouth, this thanks to its position close to the mouth of the Tiber.
