When to go
Torvaianica is a renowned seaside resort of Lazio, for which during the summer season we find numerous offers for bathing establishments, hotels and restaurants.
Background
Legend has it that on these beaches, in the second millennium BC, Aeneas landed at the mouth of the Numicus river, now identified with the Fosso di Pratica. This legend would be found in the nearby archaeological excavations of the ancient Lavinium and the sanctuary of Sol Indiges.
The first people arrived here in the 20s of the twentieth century, when families of fishermen settled here seasonally, to which were added, in the thirties and forties, following the reclamation, other nuclei on a permanent basis.
In the fifties and sixties there was a notable tourist boom, which gave Torvaianica a notable economic development.
The name derives from the Vajanico tower, built in 1580 to defend the area from the raids of Saracen pirates. The tower was rendered unusable during the Second World War, on the occasion of the retreat of the German troops, and was finally demolished in the 1960s.
