Ostra is a city of Marche.

To know

Ostra took its current name from 12 May 1881 by Royal Decree: previously the town was called Montebodio is Montalboddo; the first attestation of the original toponym (Mons Bodii, Monte Bodio) dates back to the 12th century.

The current town should not be confused with the ancient Roman city of Ostra, from which the current name derives and which is located in Le Muracce di Ostra Vetere. It was awarded the orange flag by the Italian Touring Club.

Geographical notes

Lying on one of the characteristic hills of the Marche landscape, overlooking the Misa valley, Ostra is the main town in the hinterland of Senigallia, from which it is only 14 km. Not far away is the city of Jesi (18 km) while the regional capital (Ancona) is about 40 km away.

Background

The official birth of the Municipality, took place in 1194, and took place through the so-called Patto d'Argenta, stipulated in the castle of the homonymous town in Romagna before the Archbishop of Ravenna to which it submitted until 1230 when, after two years of uprisings, the citizens of Montebodi managed to break the dominion of Ravenna and to conquer, under the protection of the Church of Rome, their independence. However, from the mid-thirteenth century to the mid-thirteenth century it passed under the dominion of its neighbor Jesi. Subsequently it was the turn of the Lords who alternated in power of this municipality until 9 June 1454, the date on which the citizens of Montalboddo drove out the last lordship and made an act of dedication to the Church. The new agreement was signed at Arcevia and the new Municipal Statute came into force, the fortress of the castle was demolished so that no lord would think of conquering it anymore.
