Martinengo Castle
  • 1 Martinengo Castle, 39 030 9408766, @. Simple icon time.svgTue-Fri 9-12 / 14.30-17.30 Sunday 14.30 / 18.30; Saturday afternoon open for events; guided tours every Sunday afternoon.. It was Bernardino Martinengo, of the family who owned a vast fiefdom in the area (and who had built more than one castle in his possessions) who had this fortress-residence built in 1485, which is grafted onto a previous fortress, of which traces can be guessed . The castle has a mighty keep that underlines its military character, even if overall the characteristic of a noble residence prevails, albeit fortified. The area of the keep corresponds to the oldest of the whole building; the drawbridge that crosses a large moat still full of water and the two small corner towers also serve as embellishments, as well as the battlements of the more recent construction area which, lower, no longer play a role of defense only, but of architectural decoration and landscaping.
The still functioning drawbridge leads to the courtyard, the sides of which have different styles, from the very simple to the elegant and refined, with an elegant portico with five colonnaded arches and capitals depicting the coats of arms of the Martinengo and Colleoni family. The other sides reveal influences of the noble Mantuan architecture which at the time was often imitated in this area of the lower Brescia plain.
Renovation and improvements were made in the eighteenth century, for example with the construction of the large three-flight staircase leading to the upper floor. The exterior was also enlivened with the addition of protruding buildings and the creation of ornamental pilasters that make the castle almost a unicum in its agreeable non-homogeneity. Several rooms were enriched with stuccos and frescoes.
After four centuries of belonging to the Martinengo Counts, the castle passed as an inheritance to the noble Venetian family of Salvadego Molin Ugoni. In contemporary times it fell into decay; purchased by the Municipality of Borgo San Giacomo and from a company of local entrepreneurs it has returned to new life thanks to the establishment of the Castello di Padernello Foundation, which oversaw its restoration and guarantees its visit and use for important events and cultural uses.
  • 2 Parish church of Santa Maria in Val Verde. Like the castle, it owes its construction to the Martinengo family. In fact, the church, of ancient medieval origin, became so ill that in 1579 it fell into disrepair. Count Pompilio Martinengo Cesaresco had it rebuilt in 1583.
  • 3 Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. It has a singular history; in fact it was desired by the veneration of the people for a fifteenth-century crucifix of good workmanship that was located in the chapel of the old cemetery adjacent to the parish. The church was built in 1833 with the donations of the people on a plot donated by Count Silvio Martinengo; the crucifix so venerated was thus able to find a worthy location.
