The 284.18 km² large and up to 348 m high island Pag (Italian: Pag) is in the south of the Kvarner Bay in Croatia and forms their transition to Dalmatia, which is also reflected in the fact that they belong to two different counties (districts). It has been connected to the mainland in the south by a bridge since 1968; During the war in Yugoslavia, the only connection between the Croatian heartland and Dalmatia was via the island of Pag. The island has around 9,000 permanent residents.

background

The elongated and in places very narrow island is in front of the mainland. From the mainland it presents itself as strongly karstified and is reminiscent of a lunar landscape. To the west it is greener and has a few beaches. Pag is known for the island's sheep cheese (Paški sir), for the sea salt obtained on the island and for the Pag lace, a sewing lace. In the north of the island there are ancient ("thousand-year-old") olive trees.

language

Croatian. With Italian and German you get by to a large extent.

getting there

In the street

The bridge to the island

The ferry from Prizna north of Karlobag takes about 15 minutes from the Adriamagistrale to the island of Žigljen, but waiting times must be expected.
