background
language
Croatian. You can get away with Italian and German in many ways.
getting there
By plane
An alternative especially for the island Pag is the small airport of Zadar.
By train
Rijeka has good rail connections to Germany, Austria and Hungary. But the train doesn't go any further.
By bus
In the street
From Germany and Austria via the Tauern Autobahn, Villach, the Karawanken tunnel, Ljubljana, Zagreb to Rijeka. A toll bridge leads to the island of Krk. Cres can be reached by ferry Brestova - Porozina from Istria, from there a bridge leads to Lošinj, alternatively from the island of Krk by ferry from Valbiska to Merag. The fastest way to get to Rab is by ferry from Stitnica, but there is also a ferry connection from Valbiska on the island of Krk. Pag can be reached either by ferry from Prizna (on the mainland) to Žigljen or from the south via a bridge. The boat crossing cannot be avoided for the small islands.
mobility
With the exception of Krk and Pag, which can be reached via bridges (there is a toll to Krk), the other islands can only be reached by ferry or with local shipping lines or water taxis (to the smaller islands such as Ilovik). Most of the smaller islands are also car-free.
